Manchester United have circled back on Borussia Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson, and this time the interest feels a lot more urgent.
The Norwegian defender was on United’s radar earlier this year, but his World Cup performances have turned that curiosity into something real. Specifically, his showing against Brazil in the round of 16. Ryerson effectively erased Vinicius Junior from the game — disciplined, tireless, the kind of shift that wins playoff games. And with Erling Haaland soaking up most of the headlines, Ryerson’s contribution almost slipped through the cracks.
According to German outlet BILD, Michael Carrick’s side has re-established contact with the 28-year-old’s representatives. It makes sense on paper. United have been chasing a dependable right-back for a while now. Noussair Mazraoui can’t stay healthy, and Diogo Dalot’s attacking numbers haven’t matched the club’s expectations. Ryerson fits the gap like a puzzle piece.
Why Ryerson Stands Out
His creativity isn’t just good, it’s elite. Last season in the Bundesliga, Ryerson racked up 15 assists. Only Michael Olise had more. Across all competitions, he finished with 18. That kind of end product from a full-back is rare. It’s the kind of stat line that makes scouts do a double take.
But Dortmund doesn’t want to lose him. They see him as a core leader in the locker room and have plans to open contract talks once the World Cup wraps up. Ryerson’s current deal runs through 2028. That gives them leverage.
Still, money talks. Dortmund would listen at around €30 million (£25.6 million). Considering they bought him from Union Berlin for just €5 million in 2023, that’s a tidy profit.
What Could Slow a Deal
United’s midfield rebuild might have to clear first. Carrick has had a frustrating window so far, and several of the club’s targets are waiting on how that domino falls before anything else moves. Ryerson could be one of those dominoes.
For now, United have made their move. Whether Dortmund bites back with a contract extension or a counteroffer is the next thing to watch.
