Aurelien Tchouameni is staying put. The French midfielder has verbally agreed to a new contract with Real Madrid through 2031, according to reports from RMC Sport and Fabrizio Romano. That deal effectively ends Manchester United’s chase for the 26-year-old, who was seen as the ideal replacement for the departed Casemiro.
What changed? A direct conversation between Tchouameni and returning Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho. ESPN reported that Mourinho made it clear the player is central to his plans. That was enough. Tchouameni reaffirmed his commitment to the Spanish capital and the new contract will make him one of the club’s top earners.
United had pushed hard. They prepared a lucrative five-year offer and were ready to table a bid over €100 million. But Real Madrid’s stance was clear from the start: they would only sell if the money funded another marquee midfield addition. Mourinho killed that idea. He wanted Tchouameni, and he got his way.
A frustrating window for United’s midfield rebuild
This isn’t the first name to slip through United’s fingers this summer. Elliot Anderson joined Manchester City. Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali both landed at Tottenham. Each was a player United had considered before missing out.
But it’s not all bad news. United have agreed a £50 million deal for Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, who’s set for a medical. They’re also closing in on Ederson from Atalanta. Both will bolster Michael Carrick’s engine room. Whether that’s enough is the open question. Casemiro is gone. Manuel Ugarte’s future is uncertain. Carrick wants genuine quality to compete on multiple fronts next season.
Tchouameni, meanwhile, shifts his focus to the World Cup. He’s recovered from a muscle injury and is expected to feature for France against Morocco in the quarter-finals. Mourinho’s pitch kept him in Madrid. And for United, another target slips away.
