Bruno Guimaraes wants out of Newcastle. And Arsenal is ready to make it happen.
The 28-year-old captain has told the club he wants to leave this summer, according to reports. Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have been tracking him for weeks. Now they’re expected to make an official offer worth around £55 million, with club-to-club talks likely to start soon.
This didn’t come out of nowhere. Standard Sport reported back in June that Arsenal had initial conversations with Guimaraes’ camp, testing the waters after Newcastle failed to qualify for European competition. Those talks went well. Encouraged, Arsenal floated a bid. And now, with the player himself pushing for the move, things are getting serious.
The timing thing
Newcastle has already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer for a combined £162 million — a number that could climb closer to £170 million with add-ons. That came after striker Alexander Isak left for Liverpool last summer for £120 million. The roster is getting picked apart.
Still, Newcastle is insisting Guimaraes isn’t for sale at any price. That’s the public stance. But the club has also seen its best players walk out the door in back-to-back summers, and Guimaraes has two years left on his deal with a club option for a third. If he wants out, the leverage shifts.
Arsenal has had a quiet summer so far. They turned Piero Hincapie’s loan into a permanent deal for £35 million and are bringing in former Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. That’s it. A midfield anchor like Guimaraes would change the tone of their window completely.
The World Cup hangover
Guimaraes just had a rough go at the World Cup. Brazil got knocked out by Norway on Sunday, and Guimaraes had a first-half penalty saved. It was the first time Brazil failed to reach the quarterfinals since 1990. Not exactly the kind of momentum you want heading into a contract standoff.
But for Arsenal, that might not matter much. They need midfield depth. They need someone who can play with the kind of edge the team sometimes lacks. Guimaraes fits that profile. Whether Newcastle actually lets him go is another question entirely.
