Ruben Amorim finally addressed the Manchester United fanbase this week, and he started with an apology.
The former United manager, sacked back in January after a miserable 14-month run, admitted he should have spoken up sooner. Instead he went silent. Now at AC Milan, he’s explaining himself for the first time.
“It is hard to explain the mistakes as I would have to explain all the context of the last adventure,” Amorim said. “The only thing I can say is that I learn a lot and I did some mistakes.”
He specifically apologized for not acknowledging supporters after his exit. “I didn’t have the opportunity — and I am sorry for that — to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment. But I am really proud to have been their coach for a year.”
That year was brutal. Amorim oversaw United’s lowest Premier League finish in club history during the 2024-25 season. They lost the Europa League final to Tottenham too. By January, the board had seen enough.
The 41-year-old Portuguese coach landed at Milan this summer, and he’s framing this as a learning experience. “Now it is a different history. There are a lot of things I could do better in the last experience. But sometimes it is like that. You need to learn to reach a different level.”
What went wrong at Old Trafford
The short version: almost everything. Amorim inherited a squad in transition and never found a consistent system. Players looked lost. Results spiraled. The fanbase, patient at first, turned restless as the losses piled up. By the end, even the supporters who wanted him to succeed had run out of excuses.
Amorim isn’t dodging responsibility. “I learn a lot. I did some mistakes. I will try to change but there are some things you never change.” He finished with a promise: “I think I will be better. That is all.”
Whether Milan gets that better version remains to be seen. But at least he finally said something.
