Manchester United Tap Dortmund for $33M Julian Ryerson After His World Cup Heroics

Manchester United have circled back on Borussia Dortmund fullback Julian Ryerson, according to German outlet BILD, and the timing is no accident. Ryerson just helped Norway knock out Brazil in the World Cup round of 16 — a 2-1 win that sent the Scandinavians to their first quarterfinal in history. He played 63 minutes of that match, and scouts from multiple Premier League clubs were reportedly watching.

United’s interest isn’t brand new. They’ve been in touch with Ryerson’s camp on and off, but this feels different. The 28-year-old Norwegian right back is in the middle of a contract standoff at Dortmund, and the club values him at north of €30 million (about $33 million). Dortmund wants to extend him — they view him as a core leader in the locker room — but they’ve made it clear they’ll listen if an offer hits that threshold.

Ryerson’s Stock Is at an All-Time High

Let’s be real: a right back with 15 league assists doesn’t grow on trees. Ryerson racked up that absurd number last season for Dortmund, bettered only by Bayern’s Michael Olise. That’s elite creator production from the fullback spot, and it didn’t go unnoticed around Europe.

Dortmund brought him in from Union Berlin in January 2023 for just €5 million. Three and a half seasons later, he’s a nailed-on starter for both club and country. The club sees him as a quiet leader — not a loud captain type, but the kind of pro who sets the standard in training and never drops below a seven out of ten. Those guys are hard to replace mid-cycle, and Dortmund knows it.

The tricky part for United? Ryerson turns 29 next season, so €30 million-plus for a guy on the wrong side of peak value feels like a lot. But the market for top-tier fullbacks is thin. Reece James can’t stay healthy. Kieran Trippier is 34. Diogo Dalot has been inconsistent. United need a reliable starter, not a project. Ryerson fits that description perfectly.

World Cup Bump Could Speed Things Up

Ryerson’s performance against Brazil in the knockouts only raised his profile. He was solid defensively and pushed forward when Norway needed an outlet. That kind of big-game showing tends to accelerate negotiations — either the club moves to lock him down or a suitor pounces before the price tag inflates further after a deep tournament run.

Dortmund’s stance is pretty straightforward: they’d prefer to keep him, but they’re not stupid. If United or someone else shows up with €35 million, they’ll shake hands and move on. The question is whether United is willing to go that high for a 28-year-old who’d be making the jump from the Bundesliga to the Premier League mid-career.

One thing’s certain: with the World Cup still going and Ryerson’s stock climbing, this won’t drag out quietly until September. Either United acts fast, or they watch another target re-sign or go elsewhere.
