Manchester United are closing in on their second major midfield addition of the summer. Andrey Santos is set to undergo a medical at Old Trafford after Chelsea agreed to sell the Brazilian for a package worth up to £50 million, according to Standard Sport.
The deal breaks down as £48 million upfront with another £2 million in add-ons that are considered easily reachable. Santos, 22, has been on United’s radar for weeks, and the move is expected to be finalized within days.
Why Chelsea Let Him Go
Santos was never viewed as untouchable by Chelsea’s hierarchy. The club liked him well enough, but Moises Caicedo’s recent contract extension essentially locked Santos into a backup role for next season. He wanted regular minutes, and the Blues were willing to listen if the price was right. Turns out, it was.
This isn’t a case of Chelsea needing to offload salary or clear space. They simply didn’t see Santos as a future cornerstone, and at £50 million, the return made sense for a player who hadn’t broken into the starting XI.
United’s Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United have been planning a midfield rebuild all summer, and this is the second piece of that puzzle. They already missed out on Mateus Fernandes, who chose Tottenham in an £85 million deal. Ederson is also expected to arrive from Atalanta, giving United two new faces in the middle of the park.
Whether they go for a third midfielder before the window closes remains unclear. Ayyoub Bouaddi has been linked. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni is still on the shortlist, but Madrid have made it clear they don’t want to sell. If they did, the asking price would start at €100 million (£85 million). Felix Nmecha is another option, though Borussia Dortmund value him around €120 million (£103 million).
For now, Santos is the guy. He’s young, he’s hungry, and he’s about to get a real shot at being more than someone’s understudy.
