Tarik Skubal Trade Talk Fades as Tigers Suddenly Look Like a Real Contender

The Detroit Tigers were supposed to be sellers. Tarik Skubal was supposed to be the biggest name available at the trade deadline. That’s how this was scripted a month ago.

Then the Tigers started winning. And winning. And now the whole narrative is upside down.

Detroit has won six of its last seven games. Since June 1, they’re 19-12 — the best record in the American League. Nobody saw that coming. The team that looked dead in the water in May is suddenly clawing back toward relevance, and the July 30 trade deadline is starting to look a lot more complicated.

According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, the Tigers have a real decision to make on Skubal, who’s been mentioned in trade rumors for months.

“In a world where the Tigers battle back from the edge before the trade deadline, they could stand pat and trust the team they assembled,” Stavenhagen wrote. “If it’s a close call, they could also attempt to thread the needle, trading Skubal for what could be a heavy haul but keeping other players and trying to remain competitive.”

The math isn’t easy. Skubal is a free agent after this season. If you’re going to move him, you do it now while his value is at its peak. But if you’re the Tigers, and you look at a team that just ripped off 19 wins in 31 games, you might start asking: why not keep him and see how far this thing goes?

Detroit still has ground to make up in the playoff race. They’re not exactly a lock for anything. But the way they’re playing, you can squint and see a path. And if you trade Skubal, you’re telling the locker room you don’t believe in what they’re building.

Stavenhagen summed up the dilemma: “If the Tigers wanted to trade Skubal and reassemble their roster without tearing it down, the time to do that would have been the offseason.”

That’s the thing. The Tigers didn’t trade him over the winter. They held. And now they’re winning. It makes the decision a lot harder than it looked two months ago.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Detroit just keeps him. They’re playing meaningful games. The fans are engaged. And a month from now, the trade deadline could come and go with Skubal still wearing a Tigers uniform, just as he has all year.
