Wes Brown on JJ Gabriel: ‘He’s Good Enough’ but United Must Handle With Care

Manchester United has a 15-year-old striker who scored 26 goals in 26 Under-18 league games last season. His name is JJ Gabriel. And according to club legend Wes Brown, the kid might already be ready for first-team minutes — but only if the club is careful about how they bring him along.

Gabriel has been buzzing through United’s academy system for a while now. He added three goals in six FA Youth Cup appearances in 2025-26. Fans have already started calling him the next Neymar, which is a lot of pressure for someone who can’t legally drive yet.

Brown’s honest take

In an exclusive interview with BetTOM, Brown didn’t hold back. He said Gabriel clearly has the talent to train and maybe even play with the senior squad. But he also flagged the mental side as the real unknown.

“Do you know what? I think he is good enough,” Brown said. “He’s obviously not a fully grown man yet, but at the same time, he’s got the talent there. You have to start to put him in so he starts to understand the men’s game.”

Brown pointed to how Barcelona handled Lamine Yamal as a blueprint. Yamal didn’t get thrown into the deep end all at once. He got eased in, bit by bit. “We know he’s got the talent. It’s whether up there mentally he’s ready. And that’s the challenge really.”

The former defender also said Gabriel’s preseason performances will matter a lot. Head coach Michael Carrick will be watching closely. A few good showings against senior opponents could be enough to earn the kid a spot in Carrick’s plans.

But should United actually play him?

Brown was asked straight up: should Gabriel get first-team minutes this season? His answer was direct.

“I would say 100% no,” Brown said. “Just because it’s someone that we should be protecting a little bit.” He hedged a little after that, admitting he doesn’t know what Gabriel’s mental makeup is like or if he’s tough enough to handle the senior game at 15. “It’s about the right time with him.”

That’s the tension United is dealing with. You’ve got a player who’s clearly too good for youth football. He’s physically and technically ahead of his age group. But the jump from Under-18s to the Premier League is massive, and messing up a talent like this could set the club back years.

United has a strong track record of promoting from within. Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and others have come through recently. But Gabriel might be different. He’s younger than most academy graduates when they get their first look. And the hype around him is already loud.

Brown said a few good preseason appearances could help Carrick decide. “It’s a tough one. Everybody grows up mentally at a different age.”

For now, Gabriel will keep doing what he’s been doing — scoring goals and forcing the club to have conversations they probably didn’t expect to have about a player this young.
