Manchester United’s midfield shopping trip just hit its first real roadblock. And it’s a big one.
Borussia Dortmund has made it clear that if the Red Devils want Felix Nmecha, they’re going to have to pay up. According to The Athletic, the German club values the 25-year-old at around €120 million, which works out to roughly $130 million in real money. That’s not a negotiation. That’s a wall.
Nmecha signed a contract extension earlier this year that runs through 2030, per FotMob, so Dortmund isn’t exactly under pressure to move him. They don’t need the cash. They don’t need to clear the books. And they definitely don’t want to lose a guy who became a central piece of their setup last season. The leverage is all on their side, and they know it.
Why United Even Bothers Looking
On paper, the interest makes perfect sense. Nmecha is 6-foot-3, mobile, comfortable on the ball, and has actual experience in a high-intensity league. United’s midfield has been a rotating door of guys who either can’t stay healthy, can’t keep possession, or can’t impose themselves physically. Nmecha checks a lot of boxes that have been empty for a while.
But at $130 million, this stops being a sensible roster fix and starts looking like another expensive swing. And United has taken too many of those lately. Remember the last time they dropped nine figures on a midfielder? The returns weren’t exactly stellar.
FootballTransfers has also reported that United’s scouts have been made aware of Dortmund’s stance. The club hasn’t walked away yet, but they’re also not rushing to write a check. That’s probably the right approach.
The Price Problem
Here’s the thing about valuations like this. They don’t just make a deal hard. They change the entire calculus. If you’re paying that much for a guy, he needs to be a difference-maker from day one. He needs to be the kind of player who transforms how your midfield functions, not just someone who slots in and plays fine.
Nmecha is good. He’s athletic, technically sound, and offers the kind of balance United has been missing. But is he $130 million good? In a market where that kind of money usually gets you a certified game-changer, it’s fair to ask whether he fits that category.
United should probably keep Nmecha on the list. But they’d be smart to keep looking too. There are other midfielders out there, and not every club is going to start the conversation at triple digits. If Dortmund doesn’t budge, and there’s no indication they will, walking away might be the best move they make all summer.
The window is still open. But it’s already getting expensive.
