Fenerbahce Just Made a Big Money Push for Mason Greenwood. Roma Might Be Done.

Mason Greenwood’s next stop might not be in Italy after all. Reports out of Turkey on Wednesday say Fenerbahce has moved fast and is closing in on a deal with Marseille for the former Manchester United forward, potentially beating out Roma and Atletico Madrid.

Roma had been working on this for weeks. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini wanted Greenwood as a key piece for next season. They even had a handshake agreement on personal terms — something in the range of €4.5 million for year one, with increases built in. But here’s the thing: Roma never got a bid accepted. Marseille wanted around €50 million. Roma was reportedly willing to go to €45 million. That gap never closed.

What changed Wednesday

Fenerbahce saw the stalemate and jumped. According to Gianluca Di Marzio and others, the Turkish club has offered Greenwood something closer to €7 million or €8 million per season. That’s nearly double what Roma had on the table. And with that kind of money on the line, Greenwood’s camp is reportedly listening.

There’s also the Marseille side of this. The French club is in a tight spot financially. They need to sell this summer. But they also know that 40% of whatever they get for Greenwood has to go back to Manchester United as part of the original sale. So they’re not budging off that €50 million asking price. Not yet anyway.

Fenerbahce now has to do what Roma couldn’t — actually get a bid accepted. That’s the hard part. But throwing around €50 million is easier when you’re not up against a salary cap the way some European clubs are. Turkish clubs have been aggressive in this market, and this feels like the latest example.

The Greenwood factor

It’s worth remembering why this is complicated beyond just the money. Greenwood hasn’t played in England since January 2022. His legal situation and the fallout from it made him toxic for United. Marseille took the gamble last summer, and he produced — goals, assists, the kind of form that reminded people why he was once considered one of the best young players in Europe. But the baggage is real. Not every fanbase is going to welcome him, and not every club wants to deal with the PR headache.

Atletico Madrid was also linked, but they haven’t pushed hard. Roma might still circle back, but right now the momentum is with Fenerbahce. If they get this done, Greenwood becomes the latest high-profile name to land in Turkey, following in the footsteps of players like Dries Mertens and Michy Batshuayi who made the move east later in their careers.

For now, it’s down to the paperwork. Marseille wants €50 million. Fenerbahce wants the player. Greenwood wants to play. That usually gets sorted one way or another.
