Manchester United is about to lock in its first addition of the summer transfer window, and it’s happening sooner than the club anticipated.
The deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson has been in the works for weeks. According to multiple reports, a fee of roughly £35 million plus £3.8 million in performance-based add-ons was agreed before the World Cup. The Brazilian is expected to sign a four-year contract. But the holdup was the tournament itself. Brazil was still alive, and no player wants to finalize a transfer while representing their country on the biggest stage.
Then Norway knocked Brazil out on Sunday. The Selecao failed to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1990. That stings for Brazil. But for United and manager Michael Carrick, it clears the runway.
Ederson is now expected to fly to England this week for a medical and put pen to paper. TEAMtalk reported the timeline first. The club hasn’t confirmed anything publicly yet, but the pieces are falling into place fast.
Carrick’s midfield rebuild takes shape, but not without setbacks
Ederson won’t be the last midfielder through the door this summer. United had targeted both Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali as priority options. But both players chose Tottenham instead, as Roberto De Zerbi landed two of his top targets for a combined £185 million. That forced Carrick and the front office to pivot down the list.
Next on the board: Chelsea’s Andrey Santos. According to Standard Sport, Santos is open to leaving Stamford Bridge this summer in search of regular minutes. Newcastle is also interested. Beyond him, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni are on the radar.
Tchouameni is the big swing. United is reportedly preparing an ambitious offer. Real Madrid values him as a core piece of their squad though. They’re reluctant to sell and would demand at least €100 million (£85 million) to even consider it. That’s a steep ask, but United has history with ambitious midfield moves and could test Madrid’s resolve in the coming days.
Another name floating around: Felix Nmecha. Borussia Dortmund values the 25-year-old at around €120 million (about £103 million). That price tag puts him in the same conversation as Tchouameni. Expensive either way.
Pirlo’s endorsement adds weight to Ederson deal
Italy legend Andrea Pirlo has already signed off on Ederson from a distance. He is a player good for the Premier League,
Pirlo said. He is a dynamic runner and intense, a player that can adapt really well there.
That kind of praise from a midfielder who defined the position for a generation carries weight. Ederson isn’t a glamour name like some of United’s other targets. But the fit makes sense. He’s physical, covers ground, and doesn’t shy away from the dirty work. Carrick seems to be prioritizing substance over star power in this first window.
United still has work to do. The midfield depth chart needs more than just Ederson. But this first move is finally locked in. Brazil’s loss is very clearly Manchester’s gain.
