Erling Haaland Sent Brazil Packing. Now England Has to Figure Him Out.

The 2026 World Cup quarterfinals are set, and the bracket is absolutely loaded. Eight teams left. No hosts. No Brazil. No Portugal. And a whole lot of questions about who actually looks like a champion right now.

Let’s be honest. The 48-team format had people worried about dilution. But the knockout rounds have been brutal in the best way. Two traditional heavyweights are already gone. The remaining eight are either legitimate contenders or teams playing with house money. Here’s how they stack up.

1. France

Still the team to beat. Didier Deschamps has this squad humming. Ten goals in group play. Three more against Sweden in the round of 32. The only blemish is a 1-0 grind against Paraguay, but that says more about Paraguay’s tactics than anything France did wrong. Kylian Mbappe scored his 19th career World Cup goal on a penalty in that game, which means he’s smashed Miroslav Klose’s all-time record. Twice this tournament, actually. France is deep, fast, and clinical. Nobody has figured them out yet.

2. Spain

Spain came in as favorites but stumbled out of the gate with a scoreless draw against Cape Verde. That feels like a long time ago now. Lamine Yamal is healthy again, and the attack looks dangerous. They handled Saudi Arabia, beat Uruguay in a chippy group finale, then demolished Austria 3-0 in the last 32. The quarterfinal ticket came on a stoppage-time header from Mikel Merino against Portugal, which broke Cristiano Ronaldo’s heart and validated Spain’s knockout credentials. They’re peaking at the right time.

3. England

England just did something almost nobody thought they could. They went to the Estadio Azteca, a place where only two away teams have ever won a competitive match, and beat Mexico on their own turf. Jude Bellingham scored twice in a minute to put England up early. Then things got weird. Mexico pulled one back. Then another. England went down to 10 men after Jarell Quansah got sent off. Dan Burn turned into a human wall for the final 20 minutes plus 11 minutes of stoppage time. They survived. Thomas Tuchel’s team showed real guts. Next up is Norway and Erling Haaland, which is terrifying and also exactly the kind of test that tells you if this run is real.

4. Argentina

The defending champions are still leaning hard on Lionel Messi, but the vibe around this team has gotten ugly. They needed extra time to get past Cape Verde. Then came the Egypt game. Argentina trailed 2-0, got a goal disallowed for Egypt early on a controversial foul call, survived a penalty shout from Mohamed Salah, and scored a stoppage-time winner on the counter. Egyptian forward Mostafa Ziko, who had a goal overturned early before scoring anyway, accused FIFA of rigging the tournament. That’s not a great look for Argentina. Lucky wins against weaker teams drop them in these rankings.

5. Morocco

Morocco is proving 2022 was no fluke. They drew Brazil in group play and probably should have won it. They finished second in Group C behind Brazil on goal difference, which set up a round of 32 matchup with the Netherlands that produced one of the wildest penalty shootouts in recent memory. Five of 10 spot kicks missed. Morocco advanced. Then they became the first team to eliminate a host nation by dominating Canada. They’re confident, organized, and dangerous.

6. Norway

Norway hadn’t been to a World Cup in 28 years. Now they’re in the quarterfinals after taking down Brazil. Erling Haaland scored both goals in a 2-0 win that wasn’t really an upset if you’d watched both teams in this tournament. Haaland is now in the golden boot conversation alongside Messi and Mbappe. The problem for England is that Haaland has made a career out of scoring against English defenses. That matchup is going to be fascinating.

7. Belgium

The people’s champions. Belgium walked into their round of 32 game against the United States with a major controversy hanging over it. Folarin Balogun had his red card suspension mysteriously overturned by FIFA after a reported call from Donald Trump to Gianni Infantino. The entire world outside the US wanted Belgium to win. They delivered. A 4-1 demolition of the hosts. Belgium’s social media account posted a simple message afterward: “Overturn this.” They’ve got Spain next and are probably overmatched, but they’ve already won the moral victory.

8. Switzerland

Somebody has to be last. Switzerland is in the quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years, which is impressive until you realize they got there by beating Colombia on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the most boring knockout game of the tournament. They’ve finally broken their round of 16 curse. They get Argentina next. The entire country of Egypt will be cheering for them.

The eight eliminated: Colombia, Egypt, USA, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Canada, Ghana, Cape Verde, Australia, Algeria, Croatia, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, DR Congo, Ecuador, Sweden, Ivory Coast, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Scotland, South Korea.
