Manchester United have put a five-year contract in front of Aurelien Tchouameni. That much is confirmed by Spanish outlet AS, with journalist Jose Felix Diaz reporting that the Red Devils made the Real Madrid midfielder what they consider a ‘very good’ offer. The 26-year-old Frenchman is currently at the World Cup, and his camp has told United he’ll sort out his club future after the tournament.
United want to upgrade the middle of their midfield. That’s no secret. And they’ve apparently decided Tchouameni is the guy to do it. The plan, according to reports, is to agree personal terms with the player before they even open formal talks with Madrid. That’s a little backwards from the usual order of things, but it shows how serious United are about getting this done.
There’s a complication, though. A big one. Jose Mourinho just took over at Real Madrid. And if the Portuguese manager sees Tchouameni as a central piece of his new project — which is far from crazy — then prying him out of the Bernabeu becomes a whole different challenge. United can offer all the money they want, but if Mourinho digs in, Madrid won’t be easy to deal with.
The timing is interesting too. United just lost out on Mateus Fernandes, who chose Tottenham over them in a move from West Ham. That stings. Fernandes was a top target. But maybe it opened the door for an even bigger swing. Tchouameni is more experienced, more proven at the highest level, and he’s got a World Cup winner’s medal on his shelf. On paper, he checks every box United is looking for.
Of course, getting Madrid to sell is only half the battle. Tchouameni has to actually want to leave. And with Mourinho coming in, there’s a decent chance the Frenchman gets sold on the project in Spain. United might be able to offer more playing time or a clearer path to being the man in midfield, but Madrid is still Madrid. The pull of that shirt doesn’t go away just because a new manager arrives.
United have other names on their list. They’re not putting all their eggs in one basket. But the Tchouameni pursuit feels different. It feels like a statement move. Whether it actually happens depends on Mourinho’s phone call with his new midfielder and whether United can find a way to make Madrid listen.
