Manchester United has been eyeing Morgan Rogers for a while now. The idea is pretty straightforward: bring in a younger version of Bruno Fernandes, someone who can eventually take over when the captain slows down. But while United has been doing its homework, Arsenal just went ahead and made the first real move.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Gunners are preparing an official approach to Aston Villa after making significant progress in talks with Rogers’ camp. There’s a belief inside the player’s circle that the Emirates is his preferred destination. That’s not nothing.
The numbers on Rogers are legit
Since moving to Villa Park from Middlesbrough in 2024, Rogers has put up 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances. That’s roughly a goal contribution every two games. Last season alone he had 26 across all competitions. He’s 6’2, fast, strong, and can play either wing or slot in as a No.10. Teams don’t grow those on trees.
Villa does not want to sell him. They just won the Europa League and finished top four. But there’s a growing acknowledgment inside the club that this summer is the best time to cash in. And the player is pushing for a move. That changes the math.
Arsenal’s urgency makes sense
Mikel Arteta just won his first Premier League title in 22 years. But his attack still looked short on creativity at times last season. Rogers is the top target to fix that. Arsenal is moving fast because they know they’re not alone. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, and even Paris Saint-Germain all have interest. But Arsenal is the one that’s actually negotiating.
For Manchester United, the situation is more complicated. Michael Carrick coached Rogers at Middlesbrough, and sporting director Jason Wilcox knows him from Manchester City’s academy. That connection is real. But United is focused on a midfield rebuild this summer. A new left winger is a priority, and a more reliable striker than Joshua Zirkzee is on the list. Rogers could solve the winger problem, which would let Matheus Cunha slide into the striker role — the exact spot he played for Brazil at the World Cup. But a record-breaking bid feels like a stretch right now.
The price tag is going to be massive
Aston Villa is pointing to Manchester City’s $116 million deal for Elliot Anderson as a benchmark. Sources say it will take a record fee for an English player to get this done. Villa is publicly saying Rogers isn’t for sale, but privately they know a deal is possible at the right number.
United is still monitoring things. So are Chelsea and City. But right now, Arsenal looks like the team that’s actually going to land him. If that happens, it’s a statement signing. And for United, it might be the one that got away before they even really got in the game.
