LeBron James Joins the Crowd Telling NBA Insiders to Put Names on Their Criticism

The Jaylen Brown trade from Boston to Philadelphia is barely a week old, and already the noise around it has gotten loud enough to pull in LeBron James.

James posted on his Instagram story Thursday morning with a simple message directed at the anonymous sources who have apparently been feeding negative information about Brown to reporters. “Put a fkn name on it!” James wrote, adding a 100 emoji. It was a direct echo of what former NBA guard Austin Rivers had been saying in a three-minute video that blew up online.

Rivers went on a rant Wednesday night that covered pretty much every angle of the situation. He called out Celtics ownership for not spending. He questioned why Brown — an NBA Finals MVP, Eastern Conference Finals MVP, and perennial All-Star — was being shipped out for what amounted to a salary dump packaged with Paul George and draft picks. And he took particular aim at the unnamed team sources who seem to be shaping the narrative around Brown.

“I’ve seen so much negativity come Jaylen Brown’s way,” Rivers said in the video. “The guy busts his ass off. He’s one of the first in the practice facility, one of the last to leave. He’s always in shape, always playing, tries to play through injury. We’re talking about an NBA champion. And he was just traded for what? Because of some salary cap issues?”

Rivers didn’t stop there. He went after the front office culture across the league, arguing that too many people in power have no real basketball background.

“This is the type of ownership that hurts the game,” he said. “If you’re not going to spend the money to put the best product out there for your fan base, then you shouldn’t be in the sport.”

Brown has never been the quietest star in the league. He’s outspoken, he runs his own media projects, and he’s not afraid to push back on conventional thinking. According to some reports, that made him a difficult fit for certain front offices. Rivers called that logic absurd.

“So yeah, he has a stream and he does all this other stuff and he is very outspoken,” Rivers said. “That can ruffle feathers or scare teams from what I’m hearing. But the only thing that really matters is does the guy show up and play? Because y’all got a bunch of twerps in the NBA that do everything right, they’re quiet, they’re easy to manage, but they can’t ball for anything.”

Several current and former players chimed in on Rivers’ post. Bradley Beal, Isiah Thomas, Richard Jefferson, JR Smith, and James Posey all commented in agreement. But LeBron’s repost is what pushed it into another tier of visibility.

The Celtics have not responded publicly to the criticism. The team has not confirmed any of the rumors about Brown’s attitude or availability. What is known is that Brown is now in Philadelphia, and the Celtics got back a package that includes Paul George plus multiple draft picks. The 76ers are getting a player who just turned 29, has won at the highest level, and by every public measure still plays at an elite two-way level.

Whether the anonymous criticism was fair or not, Brown now has one of the most influential voices in the sport standing in his corner. That tends to carry some weight.
