The U.S. men’s national team walked into the 2026 World Cup with all the momentum a host nation could ask for. They handled the pressure. They won their group. They had a crowd that turned every match into a party.
Then Belgium happened. And the scoreboard read 4-1.
For a program that spent four years talking about a new era, the result Monday felt like a rerun of an old problem. The Round of 16 is where the USMNT keeps hitting a wall. It happened in 2002. It happened in 2010 and 2014. And now it’s happened again in 2026.
Dempsey had real talk for his old team
Clint Dempsey saw it up close. He played in three World Cups. He knows what it feels like to get this far and no further. Speaking on Fox Soccer after the game, he didn’t sugarcoat it.
“Happy for the team to have dealt with the pressure that they had on their shoulders to go out and inspire this country and get that home-field advantage,” Dempsey said. “But still, we’re in the same situation. We’re not getting past the Round of 16.”
He pointed out that this version of the USMNT has the talent and the belief, but something still separates them from the truly great teams. “To be considered a great team, you’ve got to do what the team in 2002 or the team in 1930 did,” Dempsey said. “So there’s a lot of positives to take away. But at the same time, there are levels to it.”
The 2002 squad made the quarterfinals. The 1930 team took third place. That’s the bar he’s talking about. The current group hasn’t cleared it yet.
The group stage was promising
It wasn’t all bad. The Americans went 2-1 in group play with wins over Paraguay and Australia and a loss to Türkiye. For a few weeks, it looked like this team might be different. The home crowd gave them energy. The young core showed flashes of real quality.
But Belgium exposed a gap that talent alone couldn’t close. The USMNT had chances. They just couldn’t finish them. And on the other end, Belgium made every opportunity count.
So now the Americans head home. Again. And Belgium moves on to a quarterfinal matchup against Spain on Friday.
Dempsey played from 2004 to 2017. He was there for the Round of 16 exits in 2006, 2010, and 2014. He knows the feeling of walking off the field wondering what it would take to go further. The USMNT hasn’t figured that out yet. But they’re running out of time before the next cycle starts.
