Chelsea Wants Nearly Double What It Paid for Garnacho. That’s a Problem.

Chelsea Wants Nearly Double What It Paid for Garnacho. That’s a Problem.

Alejandro Garnacho’s time at Chelsea might be shorter than anyone expected. The 22-year-old winger came over from Manchester United last summer for roughly $50 million after a falling out with former United boss Ruben Amorim. One season later, Chelsea is already trying to move him.

Garnacho made 24 Premier League appearances in 2025-26. He scored once. That’s not what anyone in West London had in mind when they brought him in. His talent was never the question. His attitude has been the question. And it followed him from Manchester to Stamford Bridge without much improvement.

So now Chelsea is shopping him. According to reports from TEAMtalk and others, the club has told interested parties they want close to $115 million for a permanent sale. That’s more than double what they paid United just 12 months ago. Privately, sources suggest an offer around $75 million would force Chelsea to seriously consider it.

Reality check on the price tag

Realistically, nobody is paying $75 million for a winger who managed one goal in a full league season. Not in this market. Not with the reputation Garnacho has built for himself. If Chelsea is lucky, they might get $40 million. More likely, they end up negotiating down or accepting a loan deal they currently don’t want.

Roma has been mentioned as a potential destination. Napoli is reportedly the more serious contender. Both clubs are looking at a loan with an option to buy. Chelsea’s public stance is that they want a straight sale. That stance may not hold through August.

BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella confirmed that Chelsea is opposed to a loan for now. But he also noted that the club missed European qualification entirely this past season. They need to trim the squad. They need money coming in, not more wages going out on loan while someone else gets his best years.

Xabi Alonso’s input matters here

New manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly involved in transfer decisions alongside the front office. What he thinks of Garnacho isn’t clear yet. But if Alonso looks at the film from last season and sees a guy who checked out mentally in plenty of games, it’s hard to imagine him fighting to keep a player Chelsea inherited from a previous regime.

Garnacho has natural ability. That’s never been the issue. The issue is consistency. And work rate. And fitting into a system that demands both. Alonso’s system at Bayer Leverkusen was built on structure and discipline. Those aren’t adjectives that follow Garnacho around.

The summer is still young. Chelsea has time. But if they’re serious about moving Garnacho, they’re going to have to get realistic about what he’s worth. Right now, the asking price and the market price are not in the same neighborhood.
