Manchester United needed a midfielder. They targeted two of them. Both said no thanks and chose Tottenham instead. So now the club is looking at Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, and the situation is pretty straightforward: Madrid needs to sell, United needs to buy, and the French international might be the best option left on the board.
The Athletic reported Tuesday that Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali were United’s priority targets this summer. Both players picked Tottenham. That leaves a hole in the middle of the park that Erik ten Hag’s squad can’t ignore much longer.
Tchouameni, 26, has been at Real Madrid since 2022. He won a Champions League and two La Liga titles there. But the club’s spending under new manager Jose Mourinho has created a logjam. Madrid needs to move bodies before it can add more. Tchouameni is one of the names that could go. Eduardo Camavinga might be another, though nothing is settled on either front yet.
The Frenchman is a different kind of player than Fernandes or Tonali. He’s more of a defensive shield, a guy who reads the game well and breaks up attacks before they start. United already has Casemiro, but the Brazilian turns 33 next year and hasn’t looked as sharp as he did in his first season. Tchouameni could be the long-term answer there, or at least a rotation option who lets Casemiro rest more often than he did last year.
Madrid isn’t desperate to sell, but the club is under pressure to balance the books after a busy window. Mourinho has brought in several new faces, and La Liga’s financial rules mean the club can’t just keep everyone. Tchouameni’s market value is still high, and Madrid would want a significant fee. United has the money, especially after missing out on the other targets. Whether the Glazers are willing to spend it on a player who’d be a backup or a starter remains the open question.
United hasn’t commented publicly on any of this, per standard practice. But the chatter is loud enough that it’s worth watching. The transfer window is open for another seven weeks. A lot can change.
For now, United’s midfield plan is in a holding pattern. The two guys they wanted are gone. Tchouameni is a real option. Madrid might be willing to deal. The question is whether both sides can agree on a number before someone else jumps in.
