Manchester United’s goalkeeper situation is a little more complicated than it looks. Senne Lammens had a terrific debut season — calm, reliable, exactly what the position needed after years of shaky hands — but the depth behind him is getting reshuffled. And that reshuffle depends entirely on one man leaving first.
Altay Bayindir.
The Turkish keeper arrived from Fenerbahce in 2023 with promise but never really settled. Errors crept in. The No.1 shirt felt too heavy. By summer 2025, United had already loaned Andre Onana to Trabzonspor for a second straight season — an admission that his big-money move just didn’t work out. Now Bayindir is the one they need to move. According to The Athletic, there’s strong interest from Super Lig clubs, and a return to Turkey looks like the most likely outcome.
But here’s the catch: United won’t bring in a new No.2 until Bayindir’s exit is sealed. And the clock is ticking.
The Darlow option
One name on United’s radar is Karl Darlow, the 35-year-old Welsh international whose contract with Leeds United expired last week. He was offered an extension at Elland Road and seemed ready to sign. Now things have shifted.
Darlow is reportedly considering his options. United and Everton have both shown interest in a free transfer. That’s two Premier League clubs — Leeds and Everton — competing for the same guy, and United risks being the slowest to act.
Darlow started last season as Daniel Farke’s No.2 but got his chance after summer signing Lucas Perri struggled. He made 22 appearances, helped Leeds finish 14th, and showed he can handle a backup role without drama. At 6’3″, he’s commanding in the box. He came through Aston Villa’s academy too, which gives him homegrown status — a small but useful checkbox for a club trying to comply with squad registration rules.
United currently have Tom Heaton as their third-choice after he signed a one-year extension last month. He’s 39 and reliable in the locker room. But he’s not a long-term solution as the No.2. If United want a dependable second option behind Lammens, they need someone who can step in for a run of games without the whole operation wobbling.
Darlow fits that. He’s experienced. He’s available for nothing. And he seems genuinely torn between a few offers. United just needs to move before Everton (or Leeds themselves, if they sweeten their offer) beat them to it.
