Manchester United came sniffing around Waldemar Anton this summer and Borussia Dortmund just made their response very clear. They didn’t just say no. They elevated him.
According to German outlet Kicker, Dortmund is preparing to hand Anton an expanded leadership role — naming him the club’s third captain behind Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck. Both of those players are currently dealing with injuries, which means Anton could realistically wear the armband when the new Bundesliga season kicks off. That’s not nothing.
Anton, 29, has quietly become one of the more reliable center-backs in Germany over the last few seasons. He moved from VfB Stuttgart to Dortmund last year and settled in fast. Composed on the ball. Reads the game well. The kind of defender who doesn’t make the highlight reel but keeps his keeper from having to make saves he shouldn’t have to. He also made two appearances for Germany at the World Cup.
Man United’s interest was real. The club is still prioritizing midfield this summer — especially with Champions League soccer back on the schedule and a title push being talked about internally. But they’re not ignoring defense either. Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss the start of the season as he recovers from a back injury. Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have both proven unreliable when it comes to staying on the field. And while Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven have talent, they’re young. United needs a veteran presence back there.
That’s where Anton came into the picture. There were even whispers that United was preparing an opening bid. But Dortmund moved first.
Beyond the captaincy promotion, the club is also working on a new contract for Anton. His current deal runs through 2028, but they want to bump his wages and lock him in longer. The message is pretty loud: he’s not going anywhere.
Dortmund has a history of holding onto players they value and telling bigger clubs to look elsewhere. This feels like another one of those moments. Whether that’s enough to fully scare off United remains to be seen. But right now, Anton’s future is in Dortmund, and they’re making sure everyone knows it.
