Brazil’s World Cup Exit Finally Clears the Way for United’s Ederson Deal

Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is about to cross the finish line. The only thing standing in the way was the 2026 World Cup. With Brazil now packing their bags after a 2-1 loss to Norway on Sunday, the 27-year-old can finally get his medical done and put pen to paper.

The transfer — a deal worth around £35 million — was agreed weeks ago. But Ederson got a late call-up to the Brazil squad after Wesley pulled out injured, and international duty pushed everything to the back burner. Now that the tournament’s over for the Seleção, he’s heading back from North America to complete the move.

He came on as a 79th-minute sub against Norway, which meant he got a front-row seat for Erling Haaland’s latest masterclass. That loss ended any hope of Ederson getting more meaningful minutes in the knockout rounds, but it also fast-tracks his next chapter in Manchester.

Carrick’s First Big Get

This is Michael Carrick’s first signing as permanent head coach, and it’s a smart one. United needed midfield help after losing Casemiro, who is expected to join Inter Miami as a free agent. Ederson brings a different kind of presence — more athletic, more box-to-box energy than the aging Brazilian he’s replacing. He’s not a like-for-like swap, but that’s the point.

Atalanta fans have watched Ederson develop into one of Serie A’s more reliable two-way midfielders. He can break up play and carry the ball forward, which United’s midfield has lacked when opponents pressed them high. The numbers back it up: last season he ranked among the top midfielders in the league for tackles and dribbles completed. United’s scouting team has been tracking him for a while.

Sky Sports reports that the medicals are scheduled now that Brazil’s run is done. The club hasn’t confirmed a date, but the expectation is that it happens within the next week.

What It Means for United’s Midfield

The midfield rebuild doesn’t stop here. Carrick still needs a deep-lying playmaker and probably another young body to rotate. But Ederson gives them some immediate bite. He’s 27, in his prime, and already used to playing in high-pressure European games. That’s not nothing for a United team trying to climb back into the top four conversation.

As for Casemiro, the move to Miami feels like a formality. He’ll join Lionel Messi and the growing collection of aging stars in South Beach. It’s a soft landing for a guy who won everything at Real Madrid but ran out of gas at Old Trafford. United fans got two decent seasons out of him, but his legs were gone by year three. Ederson is a clear upgrade in terms of mobility, even if the trophy cabinet is empty by comparison.

For now, the focus is on getting the paperwork done. Ederson is expected in Manchester within days. Carrick will want him in training as soon as possible with preseason already underway.
