Ederson’s Man United Move Back On Track After Brazil’s World Cup Exit Clears the Way

Manchester United’s pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson is not falling apart. That’s the message coming out of Old Trafford this week, after rumors started flying Sunday night that the deal had gone sideways.

According to club sources cited by the Daily Mail, the transfer is still very much alive. United have agreed to a package worth roughly £39 million, including £35 million up front and another £3.8 million in add-ons. Personal terms are done. The structure is in place. The only reason it hasn’t been finalized yet is that Ederson got called up to the Brazil national team late, after Roma defender Wesley got hurt.

That World Cup trip put the medical on hold. Now Brazil is out, eliminated 2-1 by Norway in a game where Erling Haaland scored twice. So the process picks back up immediately. United says they will run a full medical now that Ederson’s international duty is over. He’s already had an initial checkup, which is standard procedure.

Ederson turns 27 this week, which puts him in that sweet spot for a signing like this. He’s not a project. He’s not a washed-up name looking for a last payday. He’s a legit midfield presence with the mobility and physicality United’s center has been missing for years. Atalanta players tend to come with good tactical training baked in, and that should translate reasonably well to the Premier League.

But one midfielder isn’t going to fix everything. United has already missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes this summer, and they’re still looking at other options to go alongside Ederson. One name that’s come up? Andrey Santos, the Brazilian who’s currently stuck behind Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo at Chelsea. United is aware he might be available. But a source told the Daily Mail the interest is early stage, and there hasn’t been any contact with Chelsea yet.

That £50 million price tag Chelsea would put on Santos is a problem. Also on United’s radar: Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, though no decision has been made there either.

What you’re seeing here is a club trying to fix its midfield problem through multiple channels at once. Ederson is the one that’s actually happening right now. Get him in the door, get the medical done, and then figure out the next piece. That’s the plan, at least.

If they pull this off cleanly, it would represent a more disciplined approach than United fans have gotten used to. This club has a habit of chasing glamour names and ending up with nothing. Ederson isn’t a flashy signing. He’s a worker. He’s the kind of player who makes everyone around him a little better by taking care of the dirty work in the middle of the pitch.

The Santos situation is worth watching. If United actually wants him, they need to act fast. But they also can’t just collect midfielders like baseball cards. Every signing has to fit a real need, not just be a name available at the right price.

For now, the focus is on Ederson. The medical is coming. The money is agreed. If this goes through without another hitch, it’ll be a small win for a club that badly needs one.
