Arsenal, Man United, and Chelsea Are All Chasing the Same Midfielder. Here’s the Latest.

The summer transfer window is picking up steam, and the big Premier League clubs are making moves. Arsenal might have found their backup plan for Bruno Guimaraes in Morten Hjulmand, but they’re also eyeing a teenager from Bayer Leverkusen named Christian Kofane. And there’s more: they’re trying to land Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola in what would be massive deals. Meanwhile, Leandro Trossard looks like he’s heading out the door after Arsenal agreed to a fee with Besiktas.

Manchester United have thrown a curveball at Chelsea by checking in on Andrey Santos. The Red Devils need midfield help after sending Casemiro off and losing Manuel Ugarte to a serious knee injury at the World Cup — he’s out for months. The Guardian reports United have made contact with Santos’s camp, and Chelsea reportedly values the 22-year-old at around £50 million. Fabrizio Romano says the Blues don’t see Santos as untouchable and would sell for the right price. This isn’t the first time United have sniffed around him, either.

United are still on track to sign Ederson from Atalanta despite some chatter in Brazil that the deal fell through. That seems like a false alarm. Their midfield shortlist apparently includes Aurelien Tchouameni, Alex Scott, Felix Nmecha, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Sander Berge, per Sky Sports. They missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, so they’ve been casting a wide net.

Arsenal’s Striker Search and a Tonali Bombshell

Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Kofane, who played for Leverkusen against them in the Champions League last season. But Newcastle also wants the 19-year-old, especially after they spent £43 million on Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim. TEAMtalk says Kofane might not love the idea of going to St. James’ Park since Newcastle won’t have Champions League football next season. That could leave the door open for Arsenal to swoop in.

At Tottenham, they’re about to confirm the £100 million arrival of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan. That’s a huge get for Spurs. They’re also targeting Rafael Leao, and Radu Dragusin is reportedly on his way out.

Liverpool’s Quiet Business and a Klopp Return

Liverpool have somehow popped up as a potential landing spot for Sergio Arribas, a Spanish attacking midfielder who plays for Almeria in the second division. Benfica was negotiating a €20 million deal for the 24-year-old, with some of that going to his former club Real Madrid. But Spanish outlet Ideal de Almeria says Liverpool have joined the race after already signing Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million last month. They’re also still chasing Adam Wharton and haven’t given up on Yan Diomande.

In other news, Jurgen Klopp is headed back to the sidelines. The former Liverpool boss has accepted an offer to take over the German national team after Julian Nagelsmann quit following Germany’s shocking World Cup exit on penalties to Paraguay. Fabrizio Romano says there are still details to work out, including Klopp’s exit from his role as Red Bull’s head of global football. Interestingly, Oliver Glasner was considered as a replacement at Red Bull, but he’s agreed to join Nottingham Forest instead.

Brentford have also made a move: they agreed a deal for Jaidon Anthony from Burnley — £17 million fixed, plus £3 million in add-ons, with a five-year contract expected soon, per Romano.
