England’s World Cup Win Over Mexico Gets Weird When Jordan Henderson Hits an Ad Board

England survived a second-half red card, a penalty kick, and 40-plus minutes of Mexico pressure to escape Azteca Stadium with a 3-2 win. Then Jordan Henderson managed to get himself injured during the celebration.

Henderson didn’t play a single minute. He was an unused substitute the whole match. But he still found a way to leave the field on a stretcher.

The 36-year-old midfielder was jogging over to greet England fans in the stands after the final whistle when he tried to hop over an advertisement board near the sideline. He didn’t clear it. He caught his foot, went down awkwardly, and immediately grabbed his arm. Medical staff rushed over with a stretcher and carried him off while his teammates looked on confused.

Video clips circulating on social media show Henderson clutching his left arm as trainers helped him onto the stretcher. Early speculation points to a possible broken arm, though the team has not confirmed anything yet.

It capped a bizarre night for Henderson. He also picked up a yellow card in second-half stoppage time, which made no sense until you realized he was probably too far off the bench or arguing with the fourth official. He was not on the field. He was just that fired up from the sideline.

How England Held On

England had taken a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to two goals from Jude Bellingham. Everything felt under control. Then Jarell Quansah got sent off in the 54th minute for a reckless tackle, and England had to play nearly 50 minutes a man down against a desperate Mexican crowd.

Manager Thomas Tuchel shifted to a back five and basically dared Mexico to break them down. For most of the second half, England parked the bus. Mexico got a penalty in the 69th minute and converted, but England answered almost immediately — one of their few counterattacks turned into the eventual winner. Mexico did not get another dangerous look after that penalty.

Players dropped to their knees at the final whistle. It was ugly. It was desperate. And it was enough.

Henderson’s Role Going Forward

Realistically, Henderson was not going to see meaningful minutes in this World Cup anyway. Tuchel prefers Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson as his starting midfield. Behind them, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, and Kobbie Mainoo are all ahead of Henderson in the pecking order off the bench.

Barring an injury crisis in midfield, Henderson is essentially an emergency option and a locker-room presence at this point in his England career. This ad-board incident does not change that. But it does mean he will likely be unavailable for the quarterfinal against Norway, which might force Tuchel to bring one of those younger guys in if something happens during the match.

England advanced. They are bruised, exhausted, and one key defender is suspended. Also, their oldest midfielder is currently icing his arm after a fall during the happy part of the night.
