Red Sox First Baseman Triston Casas Hits Another Wall in Recovery. This Time It’s His Wrist.

Triston Casas can’t catch a break. And by now, the Red Sox have to be wondering if he ever will again.

The 26-year-old first baseman was shut down from swinging this weekend because of a wrist injury. Interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed the news before Sunday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. The timing stings. Casas had just restarted a hitting progression two weeks ago, per the Boston Globe’s Tim Healey.

This is the second time his rehab from a torn left patellar tendon has hit a dead end. Casas tore it in May 2025 while running out a ground ball. He spent the offseason recovering from surgery. Then in April, he had to stop hitting again because of an intercostal strain on his left side. On June 21, Tracy announced Casas had resumed baseball activities in Fort Myers, taking light swings off a tee and soft toss. That lasted 14 days. Now his wrist is the problem.

Look, it’s been a rough stretch for a guy who looked like a cornerstone in 2023. That season, the former first-round pick played 132 games and slashed .263/.367/.490 with 24 home runs, 21 doubles and an .857 OPS. Since then, he’s appeared in just 92 games over two seasons. His numbers dipped to .222/.318/.412 with a .730 OPS and 16 homers. And before the knee injury this year, Casas was hitting .182 in 29 games. He also missed most of 2024 with torn rib cartilage.

The Red Sox offense has felt his absence. Boston entered Sunday with a major league-low 76 home runs and a 39-48 record, dead last in the AL East. First base hasn’t been a total black hole, though. Willson Contreras has been raking — .285/.378/.536 with 19 homers in the first half, and he somehow didn’t make the All-Star roster.

A few other injury updates came out of Boston too. Top prospect Roman Anthony moved his rehab to the team’s Fort Myers facility to free up space in the clubhouse. Rookie left-hander Connelly Early is seeking a second opinion on his left elbow inflammation. And veteran starter Patrick Sandoval threw five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in what’s probably his last rehab start for Double-A Portland. He allowed one hit and one walk.

There’s just no telling when Casas will be back. Or what version of him will show up when he does.
