Brazil is out of the 2026 World Cup. And Neymar, probably for the last time in a Brazil shirt, went out talking trash after a consolation goal that changed absolutely nothing.
Norway knocked Brazil out of the Round of 16 with a 2-1 win. Erling Haaland scored twice, once in the 79th minute and again in the 90th. Brazil got a lifeline in stoppage time when Casemiro caught a Norwegian player with an elbow on an aerial challenge. Penalty kick. Neymar, who had just been booked, stepped up and buried it.
Then he went straight for Orjan Nyland. The Norwegian goalkeeper. Neymar got in his face, pointed at him, made sure Nyland knew he scored. The clip is right there on social media. Neymar talking. Neymar gesturing. Neymar celebrating like it mattered.
The game ended about a minute later. Brazil went home.
Fans roasted him for it. It’s hard to blame them.
Fans Were Not Impressed
Social media lit up with people pointing out the obvious. You scored a penalty in stoppage time of a game you already lost. Cool flex.
One post called it a pathetic ending. Another noted that talking trash after a meaningless goal is a bad look. Even the broadcast caught Neymar jawing at Nyland before the whistle blew for full time.
There’s context worth noting though. Neymar was injured just days before the tournament started. He played limited minutes in Qatar, including this game, where he subbed in for Gabriel Martinelli in the 67th minute. He had maybe 20 minutes of action to make something happen. He got a penalty and scored it. That was it.
And this almost certainly was his last game for Brazil. Neymar had already talked about retiring from the national team. The assumption around the program is that he’s done now. If that’s true, his international career ends as a weird contradiction: genuinely great numbers, but no World Cup title to show for it.
Outside of friendlies, Neymar scored 34 goals in 60 games for Brazil. That’s legit. But the best Brazil finished with him in a World Cup was fourth place in 2014. They lost in the quarterfinals in 2018 and 2022. Now they’re out in the Round of 16. That’s a long way from 1994 and 2002, when Brazil won it all. Or even 1998, when they were runners-up.
So Neymar walked off the field having scored but having lost. He chose to talk trash on the way out the door. Maybe it was emotion. Maybe he wanted Nyland to know he beat him. Either way, it’s the last image of Neymar in a Brazil jersey, and it’s him running his mouth after a goal nobody will remember in a loss that will.
