Alexi Lalas is not one to sugarcoat things. And ahead of England’s Round of 16 matchup against Mexico at the World Cup, the former USMNT star and current FOX Sports analyst made it crystal clear what he thinks of the Three Lions’ chances.
Piers Morgan, the English TV host who loves to stir the pot, posted on X that England should win 2-0 thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka. He argued the altitude, heat and crowd noise are real factors but said the talent gap matters more. Lalas quote-tweeted that and basically said: yeah, I agree. But if England loses, it’s a full-on catastrophe.
“Given the talent and depth, it would be a colossal disaster and inexcusable failure for England to lose this game vs. Mexico,” Lalas wrote.
That tweet landed like a grenade. Fans from both sides jumped in. Some English supporters called it disrespectful to Mexico. Others worried Lalas might be right.
Why Mexico City is a different beast
This game is at Estadio Azteca, which sits 7,220 feet above sea level. For comparison, that’s about 2,000 feet higher than the Denver Broncos’ stadium. Players feel it in their lungs by the 60th minute. The ball moves differently. Your body doesn’t recover the same way between sprints.
Weather could also play a role. Thunderstorms are forecasted around game time. Temperatures might drop from the high 70s into the 60s, but that’s because of rain. So it could be a wet, slippery night on top of everything else.
And then there’s the crowd. Mexican fans in Mexico City are famously hostile. USMNT players have talked about getting hit with batteries, loose change, even worse stuff. England is walking into a wall of noise and hostility that most of their players have never experienced.
Can England handle the pressure
On paper, England is the better team. They have more depth, more star power, and a system that’s been working. But World Cup knockout games are rarely won on paper. Mexico knows this stadium. They know how to use the altitude. Their fans will be louder than anything England has faced in years.
Lalas might be right that a loss would be embarrassing. But calling it a disaster doesn’t make the conditions go away. England has to prove they can handle the chaos. If they don’t, the criticism will be brutal. And Lalas will probably have something to say about that too.
