Allisha Gray Didn’t Hold Back When Asked About the Refs Live on TV

Allisha Gray kept it real. Maybe a little too real for a mid-game interview.

The Atlanta Dream guard was talking to the sideline reporter Saturday night when she got asked how the team planned to fight back against the Golden State Valkyries. Gray was honest about the game plan and then just let it fly about the officials.

“You just gotta keep playing,” Gray said. “Refs are trash, but we moving on from that.”

The clip hit social media almost instantly. Legion Hoops posted it and it spread fast. Gray didn’t seem bothered. She had already played the game and knew exactly what she said. The Dream lost 88-83, their fifth straight loss, and frustration was clearly setting in.

Gray is in her fourth season with Atlanta and her 10th in the WNBA overall. She has worked her way into being one of the league’s better two-way players and an All-Star candidate. But none of that matters when your team can’t stop losing.

How the Dream looked against the Valkyries

Atlanta actually had four players in double figures. Gray led everyone with 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal. She shot 5-of-17 from the field and 1-of-5 from three but got to the line 16 times and hit 11 of those free throws. Rhyne Howard added 19 points and five boards. Angel Reese put up 17 and 13. Madina Okot chipped in 11 points and two rebounds.

Still, it wasn’t enough. Golden State made plays down the stretch and Atlanta couldn’t answer.

The Dream dropped to 12-9 on the season. They sit third in the Eastern Conference, ahead of the Washington Mystics and the Toronto Tempo but behind the Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty. That five-game skid is starting to cost them real ground.

Gray’s on-air comment was blunt but not surprising. Players get fed up. And when a microphone is in your face after another close loss, sometimes the filter disappears. The league probably won’t love it, but fans online ate it up.

Atlanta gets a few days to reset before hosting the Seattle Storm on July 9 at 8 p.m. ET. That game is at home. They need to stop the bleeding soon or that third-place spot isn’t going to hold.
