Dodgers Swap Catchers After Chuckie Robinson’s Cold Streak at the Plate

The Los Angeles Dodgers made a quiet but telling roster move on Saturday, swapping out backup catcher Chuckie Robinson for Triple-A standout Eliezer Alfonzo. The timing is interesting. The team is 58 games into a dominant season, holding an 11.5-game lead in the NL West as of July 4, but depth behind the plate has become a genuine concern.

Will Smith remains sidelined, and Dalton Rushing has been handling the bulk of the catching duties. Robinson wasn’t exactly forcing the issue at the plate. He went 2-for-23 in his time with the big club. That’s a .087 average. Not ideal for a team that needs production up and down the lineup when Smith is out.

The Dodgers announced the move on X, formerly Twitter, saying they’d selected Alfonzo’s contract and optioned Robinson to Triple-A Oklahoma City. It’s Alfonzo’s first official MLB call-up, though he did spend spring training with the Dodgers after signing a minor league deal back in November. He hit three doubles in 15 Cactus League games that spring. That clearly left an impression on Dave Roberts and the front office.

Alfonzo’s numbers in Oklahoma City turned heads

Through 49 games with the Oklahoma City Comets, Alfonzo is hitting .318. That’s not just solid — it’s the kind of production that forces a call-up when injuries create an opening. The guy has spent eight seasons in the Detroit Tigers’ minor league system, so it’s not like he’s some fresh-faced rookie. He knows how to catch a game. He knows how to handle a pitching staff. And right now, he’s hitting better than anyone the Dodgers have currently backing up Rushing.

Robinson, meanwhile, heads back to Triple-A to get regular at-bats and work on the swing that never really got going in LA. He was brought in as an alternate option when Smith went down, but Alfonzo’s hot streak made him an easy swap.

The Dodgers enter the holiday with a 58-31 record, the best in baseball. No other team in the NL West is above .500. They’re also four games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the National League. So this isn’t a panic move. It’s more like a calculated upgrade at a position where the margin for error is thin.

Alfonzo will likely get his first MLB at-bat within the next few days, assuming the Dodgers don’t make another move before then. Smith’s timeline for return is still unclear, so Alfonzo might actually get some meaningful playing time. That’s not something you usually say about a guy making his debut as the No. 3 catcher, but here we are.
