Manchester United’s Midfield Fix Might Not Be the World Cup Star Everyone’s Watching

Manchester United’s Midfield Fix Might Not Be the World Cup Star Everyone’s Watching

Johan Manzambi is having a hell of a World Cup. Three goals, two assists, and the 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder is running laps around defenders in Germany’s colors. He’s the frontrunner for the tournament’s Young Player award and he’s been on Manchester United’s radar for a while now. That much is clear.

But here’s the thing. He might not be what United actually needs.

Let’s back up. According to journalist Craig Hope, United have kept tabs on Manzambi for years. The kid was a monster in the Bundesliga this season — five goals, four assists in 27 games, and he basically carried Freiburg to the Europa League final. He won the league’s Revelation of the Season award. Against Premier League opposition in that final, he stood out. So the interest is real. United missed out on Mateus Fernandes and they’re hunting for a midfielder this window.

Manzambi fits the description of a box-to-box guy. High energy, loves to carry the ball into the final third, links play, arrives late in the box. He’s a force of nature when he’s on the ball. But that’s not where United is weakest.

The actual hole in United’s midfield

What United really needs — and this isn’t exactly a secret — is a pure controller. Someone who sits deep, dictates tempo, and gives the back line some actual protection. A holding midfielder. Manzambi is more of a shuttler who needs a disciplined anchor behind him to do his best work. United doesn’t really have that guy right now.

Newcastle is also pushing hard for Manzambi. The Toons are reportedly ahead in the race, and more clubs could jump in if he keeps balling out on the world stage. But even if United wins that sweepstakes, the fit is awkward.

Their actual priority target, per reports, is Alex Scott from Bournemouth. Scott’s profile lines up a lot better with what United’s midfield is missing. He can control a game. He reads danger. He doesn’t need someone else to hold the structure together for him. But whether United can pry him away from Bournemouth is another question entirely.

So United’s summer could go one of two ways. They chase the shiny young star at the World Cup and try to make the pieces fit later. Or they go get the guy who actually solves the problem. Manzambi is electric. But electric doesn’t always mean effective, especially if the system around him isn’t built for what he does best.
