Louis Saha isn’t usually the guy who drives transfer speculation. But the former Manchester United striker went out of his way this week to tell his old club exactly what they should do this summer. And he picked a pretty specific target.
Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle’s midfield engine. The guy Arsenal has been circling for months.
Saha told the Metro that if United wants to replace Casemiro properly, they shouldn’t be looking for a project. They need someone who has already done it in the Premier League. Someone like Guimaraes.
That quote is worth repeating: “Maybe someone who has already played in the Premier League would have been better. … Maybe someone like Guimaraes would be better.”
Why United’s Midfield Is a Mess Right Now
Casemiro is gone. His contract ran out, and nobody’s pretending that was a shock. The real problem is that Manuel Ugarte was supposed to be the long-term answer, but he’s been uneven at best, and now he’s out with what looks like a bad injury. So you’ve got a hole in midfield that’s basically two players wide. Maybe three.
BBC Sport has already reported that United has an agreement in place for Ederson from Atalanta. That’s one body. But if Saha is right, and if the club’s internal thinking matches what he’s saying publicly, there could be room for another big signing in the middle of the park.
That’s where Guimaraes comes in.
Newcastle Is Running Out of Bodies to Sell
Here’s the thing about Newcastle this summer: they’ve already let Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali go. Alexander Isak left last year in a monster deal to Liverpool. The core is getting picked apart piece by piece. At some point, you have to wonder if the club can afford to lose another one.
Newcastle has already turned down £55 million for Guimaraes, according to reports. The asking price is reportedly around £100 million for the 28-year-old Brazilian. That’s a lot for a guy who turns 29 this fall, but here’s the counterargument: he’s exactly the kind of player who makes everyone around him better. He’s not flashy. He’s just consistently good, and he does the dirty work that allows attackers to attack.
Arsenal has been the most concrete suitor so far. But nothing has advanced past the talking stage. So the door is cracked open for United.
What Saha’s Argument Gets Right
Saha mentioned that whoever comes in needs to adapt quickly. “Next year is going to be tough and we need those midfielders to be right on the spot right away.” That’s not just coach-speak. United can’t afford another season of waiting for signings to settle in. The Premier League doesn’t give you a grace period anymore.
Guimaraes has played three full seasons in England. He knows the pace, the refs, the travel, the physical toll. That’s not nothing. A player who already understands those things is worth a premium, especially when your other option is hoping a 22-year-old from another league hits the ground running.
Whether United actually makes a move is another question. The Ederson deal suggests they’re already spending money in midfield, and the Glazers aren’t exactly writing blank checks these days. But if the club can clear some salary off the books, and Newcastle’s resolve cracks under another big offer, this could get very interesting very fast.
Saha made his case. Now it’s up to the people in charge at Old Trafford to see if they agree.
