Manchester United Shift Midfield Strategy With World Cup Star Ayyoub Bouaddi as Top Target

Manchester United’s search for a long-term Casemiro replacement just took a sharp turn. The club has been scouring Europe for a midfielder who could anchor the middle of the park for years, and they’ve now zeroed in on a teenage star making waves at the World Cup.

Ayyoub Bouaddi, the 18-year-old Lille midfielder who plays for Morocco, has emerged as the club’s primary target. According to reports from Sky Sports, United made additional checks on Bouaddi this week as he prepares for a Round of 16 matchup against Canada. The kid has been turning heads in Qatar with composed passing and defensive instincts that belie his age.

This pivot marks a notable shift for INEOS, United’s ownership group. They previously insisted on signing a Premier League-proven midfielder to replace Casemiro. Their top three targets were Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes. None of those deals got done. Anderson stayed put, Tonali’s move fell through, and Fernandes went elsewhere when United balked at the fee.

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott was supposed to be the backup plan, but the Cherries raised his asking price and that option went cold too.

So here we are. United’s midfield situation is urgent. Michael Carrick, who’s overseeing a rebuild in the middle of the park, has asked for three new signings. That demand forced the club’s hand. They had to look beyond the Premier League, and Bouaddi is the guy they like.

Lille has a price tag, but there’s a catch

Lille knows they’ve got a gem. Bouaddi has been a regular for them this season and is already a full Morocco international. Unsurprisingly, the French club has set a firm price: £86 million. That’s steep for an 18-year-old, even one this promising.

But there’s a workaround. According to reports relayed by The Peoples Person, Lille would accept a cut-price fee if United loans Bouaddi back to Lille for another season. That would let the kid develop for one more year in Ligue 1 before moving to Old Trafford. Several of United’s league rivals are open to that same loan-back arrangement, which complicates things.

United has opted against matching similar fees before, most recently with Fernandes. Whether they’ll go all in on Bouaddi remains the open question.

What’s clear is that Bouaddi has shown he can handle big moments. The World Cup stage isn’t too bright for him. And now the ball is in United’s court. Literally. They’ve done the scouting work. The question is whether they’ll write the check.
