If you were holding out hope that LeBron James would bring his talents to Madison Square Garden this summer, you might want to let that go now.
According to multiple sources cited by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, the chances of James joining the Knicks are essentially zero. Bondy wrote on X that while there was a “check in” between the two sides, no serious discussions ever took place, and one source put it bluntly: “Not gonna happen.”
The timing here matters. New York just won the NBA championship. And as Rich Paul, James’s agent and longtime confidant, recently explained on his podcast, that might be the exact reason James isn’t heading there now.
“If the Knicks hadn’t won, there would be no board. He’d be going to the Knicks,” Paul said.
Think about that for a second. Paul is essentially saying that LeBron had New York at the top of his list — until they went and won it all. It’s an interesting twist because normally stars want to join a winner. But James, at 40 years old and chasing his fifth ring, apparently wants to go somewhere he can be the missing piece, not just another guy on a team that already figured it out.
What a LeBron-Knicks pairing would have looked like
It’s hard not to imagine how ridiculous that lineup would have been. James alongside Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and the rest of that deep Knicks roster? That’s a superteam on paper. And it wouldn’t have required New York to blow up its core either, since James has made it clear he’s willing to take less money to join a contender.
Madison Square Garden has always held a special place in James’s career. He’s talked about the energy in that building for years, and some of his best individual performances have come there. From a narrative standpoint, it made too much sense — the kid from Akron closing out his Hall of Fame career in the world’s most famous arena, wearing a Knicks uniform.
But that story isn’t happening. Not now.
Where does LeBron go from here?
James hasn’t made any public announcement about his plans, and the Lakers are still very much in the picture. But if he’s looking for a team that didn’t just win a championship and could use a veteran superstar to push them over the top, there aren’t a ton of obvious options. A return to Cleveland? A move to a young team like the Rockets or Spurs? Nothing feels as clean as the Knicks fit would have been — minus that whole championship problem.
For now, the Knicks are celebrating their title, and LeBron is weighing his next move. Just don’t expect those two paths to cross.
