Manchester United made it official on Friday: Scarlett Hill is staying put. The 18-year-old defender signed her first professional contract with the club, locking her in through the summer of 2028 with a club option for an extra year. Hill has been at United since she was nine years old.
This isn’t just a paper move. Hill spent part of last season on loan at Sheffield United, where she got real first-team minutes. Four appearances in a Tier Two grind, helping Sheffield keep their spot in the division. That kind of experience is exactly what United’s academy pipeline is supposed to produce.
Hill said in a statement that going from watching her role models as a kid to actually sharing a locker room with them still feels surreal. She thanked her academy coaches — every single one — and her parents for the years of driving her to practice and the rest of it. The kind of thing you hear a lot from young players signing their first deal, but you can tell she means it.
She also made a point about the standards at United. Said she knows how high they are and plans to keep pushing herself to learn and grow in that environment. That’s the right thing to say, but it also tracks with what people inside the club have been saying about her attitude.
Matt Johnson, United’s Director of Women’s Football, called the signing a well-earned milestone. He credited Hill’s dedication, the academy coaching staff, and the family sacrifice that got her to this point. He also made clear this is part of a bigger picture — the club is trying to build a world-class youth development program for the women’s side. Signing Hill is one piece of that.
This announcement comes right after Layla Drury also signed her first pro deal with United. Two young players, both homegrown, both committing long-term. That’s not an accident. The club is signaling that the academy route is real, that there’s a path from the youth teams to the senior squad.
Hill and the rest of the squad return later this month to start preseason. She’ll come back with a pro contract in her pocket and some actual first-team minutes under her belt from the Sheffield loan. Not a bad place to be heading into next season.
