16-Year-Old Man United Phenom Signs Pro Deal. Her Reaction Says It All.

Manchester United officially locked in one of its brightest young prospects on Thursday, handing 16-year-old forward Layla Drury her first professional contract. The deal runs through June 2029, and the club made it clear this isn’t just any signing — it’s a statement about how they plan to build their women’s team going forward.

Drury already made history before she signed anything. She debuted for United’s senior team earlier this year at 16 years and 220 days old, breaking a club record held by Lauren James since 2018. Oh, and she scored in that same game — a 5-0 blowout of Burnley — becoming United’s youngest-ever goal scorer. Seven appearances across all competitions later, and the club decided the kid was ready for a proper professional commitment.

What the deal means for United’s women’s program

Internally, United views Drury as the poster child for their strategy to build a financially self-sufficient women’s side by pumping resources into academy development. The idea is simple: grow your own stars instead of overpaying on the transfer market. Drury, who grew up a United fan, is the proof of concept they’ll point to for years.

“Growing up as a Manchester United fan, signing a professional contract with the club was always the dream, but now I know it’s only just the beginning,” Drury said. She added that she’s grateful to everyone in the academy who helped her get here, calling United “the perfect club to support me in reaching my potential.”

Director says the best is yet to come

Matt Johnson, United’s Director of Women’s Football, didn’t hold back on the praise. “We are all really proud of Layla’s development,” Johnson said. “She possesses all of the necessary technical attributes and the right work ethic to represent Manchester United, and reach the highest levels of the game.”

Johnson framed Drury’s rise as proof that the academy pipeline is working. “It is a really exciting time for the club as we continue to enjoy the rewards of the outstanding work taking place throughout our Academy,” he said. He also emphasized that creating pathways for young players is the long game United is committed to playing.

Drury will wear the number 27 shirt going forward.
