The Seattle Mariners got wrecked on multiple fronts Thursday night. Not only did they lose to the Los Angeles Angels, but they also lost their two best healthy outfielders to injuries in the same game.
Julio Rodriguez took a 78 mph throw from Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel to the back of the head while trying to advance to second base in the first inning. The ball caught him flush. Rodriguez somehow made it to third base on the play but needed attention from trainer Kyle Torgerson. He stayed in the game initially but was pulled shortly after, according to MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer.
The Mariners have not released an update on Rodriguez’s condition as of late Thursday night. A 78 mph baseball to the helmet is no joke. The team is probably holding its breath.
Robles goes down too
Victor Robles replaced Rodriguez in center field. He didn’t last long. Robles took a pitch to the forearm and wrist area in the fifth inning and was pulled as well, per Kramer.
So the Mariners finished the game with a patchwork outfield and a lineup that suddenly looks thin. This is a team that has struggled to score runs all season. Losing Rodriguez, their best hitter and the face of the franchise, could be a death blow for a club that already sat below .500 past the midway point of the 2026 season.
Seattle’s offense has underachieved badly. The pitching has been solid, but the bats have gone quiet over and over. If Rodriguez misses significant time, the Mariners are probably done as a playoff contender. The AL West is messy but winnable. Without him, it’s hard to see how they hang around.
The team should have more clarity on both players Friday. Fans are already anxious. The Mariners haven’t made the playoffs since 2022, and this was supposed to be the year they finally got back. Instead, they’re losing key guys to freak injuries in a game against a last-place team.
You can’t make this stuff up.
