The Jaylen Brown trade saga had plenty of twists, but one detail keeps surfacing: the Portland Trail Blazers thought they had a real shot. They were ready to give Boston a serious offer. But Brown wasn’t interested.
According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Blazers had a deal framework in place. It centered on Jerami Grant and likely included Scoot Henderson plus draft picks. The Celtics were listening. The issue was that Brown made it clear he didn’t want to go to Portland.
“The Portland Trail Blazers had a deal on the table as well,” Siegel said on the Clutch Scoops podcast. “It was centered around Jerami Grant and other assets, presumably Scoot Henderson and some draft assets that would’ve gone back to Boston, but we heard Jaylen Brown had no interest in going to Portland.”
That’s the kind of thing that kills a trade before it really starts. It doesn’t matter how good the offer looks on paper if the player involved blocks it.
Celtics weren’t just dumping Brown
Boston wasn’t trying to ship Brown anywhere just to get rid of him. They wanted to do right by a guy who had been with the franchise through a lot. That meant finding a destination he actually wanted to go to, not just the highest bidder.
Early in the process, the Celtics reportedly set a high asking price. Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote that Boston was seeking up to four first-round picks. Portland was seen as a frontrunner because they seemed willing to meet that price. But willingness from the front office doesn’t matter if the star player says no.
Why Philly got the deal
Eventually, the Celtics lowered their asking price. That opened the door for the 76ers, who sent Paul George and multiple draft picks to Boston. Brown lands in a situation with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, which is a competitive fit he clearly wanted.
Portland, meanwhile, walks away empty-handed. They had the assets. They had the interest. They just didn’t have the player’s buy-in.
Now it’s worth watching how Paul George fits in Boston. The Celtics moved on from Brown and brought in a veteran star with a different style. It’s a gamble, but one they were willing to make once Brown’s preferred path became clear.
