Manchester United Zeroes In on Brighton Midfielder Carlos Baleba. But Can They Get Him?

Manchester United has set its sights on Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. That’s according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who posted on X that the Red Devils view the 22-year-old Cameroonian as a key target for the coming transfer window.

Baleba put together a solid season for the Seagulls last year, making 35 appearances across competitions. He’s not flashy. But he’s effective. He breaks up plays, reads passing lanes well, and doesn’t mind getting stuck in. United’s midfield has lacked that kind of bite for a while now, and Michael Carrick seems intent on fixing that.

What Baleba brings to the table

He’s a defensive midfielder first. Tough-tackling, energetic, and good at timing his challenges. He can also push forward as a box-to-box option if needed, though he’s not exactly a goal threat yet. That’s something he’ll need to develop. But at 22, there’s time.

One thing that works in United’s favor: Baleba already knows the Premier League. He won’t need a season to adjust. That’s huge for a club that’s been burned by signings who took months to find their footing.

The contract problem

Here’s the catch. Baleba’s current deal at the Amex runs through 2028. Brighton doesn’t have to sell, and they’re known for playing hardball with their top assets. United probably won’t get him at a discount. But if they’re serious about shoring up the midfield, they’ll have to pay up.

Jacobs didn’t mention a specific fee in his post, but early chatter around the league suggests Brighton could demand north of $60 million. That’s steep for a player who’s still developing offensively. Then again, Premier League prices are what they are.

Carrick’s midfield puzzle

Carrick has options in the middle, but none of them scream stability. Mason Mount has been inconsistent. Kobbie Mainoo is still growing into a consistent starter. Casemiro is aging. Baleba would add the kind of physical presence that lets other players take more risks going forward.

It’s not a glamour signing. It’s a smart one. If United can get the deal done, they’re getting a midfielder who can start right away and grow into a core piece for years.

Whether Brighton lets him go this summer is another question entirely. But United has made their intentions clear. Now it’s up to the negotiators.
