LeBron James isn’t rushing. That’s the word from teams trying to sign him, anyway. And it’s starting to reshape how everyone is thinking about this free agency cycle.
According to ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel, the four-time champion is taking a patient approach. He’s letting agent Rich Paul field proposals and evaluate roster-building plans from interested franchises before committing to anything. Multiple league sources told Siegel they don’t expect a decision until right before NBA Summer League or near the start of it. Summer League runs July 9 through July 19 in Las Vegas.
“He’s completely chilling. He’s letting Rich Paul handle this situation, having teams come to him with proposals and their offers and what it could potentially look like and what other moves they’re looking to make in free agency because that’s going to weigh on LeBron’s mind as well,” Siegel said on a recent episode of Clutch Scoops.
The measured timeline makes sense when you consider what James is actually weighing. It’s not just about the contract. He wants to see how each team fills out its roster over the next couple of weeks. Who signs where. Which trades happen. What the championship window actually looks like in, say, Golden State versus Miami versus Philly.
James informed the Lakers he intends to continue his career elsewhere, which kicked off what might be the most watched free agency sweepstakes in years. The Warriors, Heat, Cavaliers, 76ers, Timberwolves, and Nuggets all reportedly have interest. That’s a wide net. And every one of those teams is still making moves.

Siegel also said the process should start accelerating next week. In-person meetings are expected to happen during Summer League. “At some point next week, we’ll have a clearer picture of what LeBron is actually thinking and that’s when he’s going to actually have these in-person meetings. I fully expect that to happen during Summer League.”
This approach gives teams a little more runway too. If you’re Denver, you can still make a trade or two before James sits down with you. Same for Miami or Cleveland or anyone else. The more complete the roster looks, the better the pitch.
But it also means everyone is waiting. Executives, agents, other free agents whose decisions might hinge on where James lands. The entire league is essentially paused until LeBron decides he’s seen enough.
Summer League in Vegas has always been a hub for deal-making and back-channel chatter. This year it might be the stage for the biggest meeting of the offseason.
