Aaron Judge Called Out the Yankees for a ‘Lack of Focus’. Ken Rosenthal Says That’s a Big Deal.

Aaron Judge doesn’t call out his teammates often. He’s usually the guy standing in front of a podium deflecting blame and offering measured takes. So when he said the Yankees have shown a “little lack of focus” after their seventh straight loss, it landed differently. Ken Rosenthal called it a “stinging criticism” on Foul Territory this week, and he’s not wrong.

The Yankees are in a mess right now. A seven-game losing streak will do that. But it’s not just the losses. It’s how they’re losing. Sloppy defense. Mental mistakes. The kind of stuff that drives managers crazy and makes beat writers reach for thesaurus entries for “unraveling.”

Food poisoning and fractured ribs don’t help

Manager Aaron Boone revealed this week that multiple players are dealing with food poisoning. That’s real. Missing four regulars, including Judge himself (fractured rib), plus starter Max Fried, is also a real problem. Rosenthal acknowledged those factors on the show. But he zeroed in on Judge’s comment as the real red flag.

“For him? That’s a stinging criticism,” Rosenthal said. “It’s the equivalent of a hit job.”

Judge doesn’t do theatrical. When he says something like that, it carries weight. Rosenthal noted that if Judge is calling out the team’s focus, it’s time for everyone to snap out of it.

Who was Judge talking about?

Rosenthal speculated that Judge might have had someone specific in mind. Jazz Chisholm Jr. had an ejection on Sunday night. That kind of thing stands out when you’re already shorthanded. But Rosenthal didn’t name names beyond that. The team hasn’t confirmed any targets, and Judge isn’t the type to air specific grievances publicly.

Still, the comment hangs in the air. The Yankees are down, they’re sick, they’re missing their captain, and now their captain is basically saying they’re not locked in. That’s a bad look no matter how you spin it.

New York tries to stop the bleeding Friday against the Minnesota Twins. Whether they do will say a lot about how much Judge’s message actually landed.
