The Jaylen Brown trade landed like a bomb. Paul George and picks going out, Brown coming in. That alone shifted the entire Eastern Conference power structure. But Philadelphia isn’t done yet.
According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, the Sixers have already reached out to LeBron James’s camp. They want to know if he’s interested. And after what they just pulled off, they might have a real shot.
Think about it. LeBron is an unrestricted free agent for the first time in eight years. He’s 41 but still put up 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists last season. He’s not chasing stats at this point. He’s chasing rings. And the 76ers just gave him a path to one that doesn’t require him to be the man every single night.
Why Philadelphia makes sense for LeBron
Joel Embiid is an MVP when healthy. That’s a big when, sure — he played 39 games last year and missed the start of the playoffs — but the talent is undeniable. Tyrese Maxey has turned into an All-Star level guard who can carry stretches of a game. And now you add Jaylen Brown, who showed he can be a primary scorer when he led the Celtics to the No. 2 seed while Jayson Tatum was out.
LeBron wouldn’t have to carry the load every possession. He could pick his spots, run the offense when Embiid sits, and save his legs for the fourth quarter. That’s the dream scenario for a 41-year-old who has logged more minutes than anyone in NBA history.
And then there’s Nick Nurse. Say what you want about his last year in Toronto, but the guy has a championship ring. He coached the Raptors past the Celtics in the 2026 playoffs with a banged-up Sixers roster. That’s not nothing. LeBron has played for some great coaches — Spoelstra, Lue, Vogel. Nurse belongs in that conversation.
The competition is real
The Nuggets are lurking. The Cavs want him back. Golden State keeps getting mentioned. Miami always feels like a threat with Riley pulling strings. But none of them can offer what Philadelphia just built: a roster where LeBron could be the third-best player on paper and still be LeBron James.
That’s a weird sentence to type but it’s true. Brown and Embiid are both top-15 players when healthy. Maxey is knocking on that door. Add LeBron’s playmaking and basketball IQ to that mix and you’ve got a lineup that can score with anyone and has enough size to bother Boston and Milwaukee.
The Sixers are clearly in win-now mode. They didn’t trade for Brown to rebuild. They traded for him to win a title this year or next. Adding LeBron would be the kind of move that makes everyone else in the East nervous. And based on the reporting coming out, it’s not just wishful thinking.
