Dortmund Wants to Pull a Bellingham With Felix Nmecha. Man United Might Have to Bite.

Manchester United’s search for a midfielder this summer is starting to look like a grocery run where every shelf is empty. They’ve lost Casemiro to free agency (he’s basically on a flight to Miami), they whiffed on Elliot Anderson who’s heading to Manchester City, and Mateus Fernandes appears bound for Tottenham. So now the Red Devils are staring down a very expensive Plan B.

That plan? Felix Nmecha. The Borussia Dortmund midfielder, who just turned heads at the World Cup in North America even as Germany crashed out in the Round of 32 against Paraguay. Nmecha started all four games for Die Mannschaft, scored once, set up two more goals, and generally looked like a guy who can run a midfield by himself. That’s exactly the kind of player United needs next to whoever they end up with at the 6 spot.

According to Sport BILD, as relayed by Sport Witness, Dortmund is willing to negotiate a deal that includes bonus payments similar to the Jude Bellingham structure Real Madrid agreed to in 2023. You remember that one: €103 million base, but with add-ons tied to things like Champions League qualification and individual performance, the total could hit €127 million or even €133 million. Dortmund basically saw how well that worked and is thinking, why not do it again?

The base fee for Nmecha is reportedly going to sit around €100 million. And with add-ons that are actually achievable (not the kind you need a miracle to unlock), Dortmund could end up with a very pretty number in their bank account. Nmecha is under contract through 2030, so they’re in no rush to discount him.

Now here’s where it gets tricky for United. Missing on Anderson and Fernandes means INEOS has to move fast or risk having no Casemiro replacement ready when the season starts. And it’s not like Nmecha is a secret anymore. His form for Dortmund last season was legit: 5 goals and 3 assists in 42 games across all competitions. Plus his World Cup run put him on a lot of radars. United isn’t the only team watching.

The question is whether United is willing to go that high on a player who’s good but maybe not quite Bellingham-level yet. Nmecha turns 26 this season, so there’s a prime window ahead of him. But €100 million base is a lot for a club that’s already spent big on Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount in previous windows. United’s new football operations structure under INEOS is supposed to be smarter with money. This would test that.

Nothing is done yet. Talks are happening. Dortmund is open to the bonus-heavy structure. But if United hesitates much longer, someone else might just swoop in and make the call for them.
