Zach Werenski Told Columbus His Preferred Destination After Blocking a Trade to Dallas

Zach Werenski has his sights set on a specific landing spot. And it is not Dallas.

The Columbus Blue Jackets star defenseman made it clear he would not sign an extension with the team beyond the 2027-28 season. That put the front office in motion. They found a trade partner in the Dallas Stars and had a deal lined up. Werenski said no.

Now we know where he actually wants to go.

According to Pierre LeBrun on TSN’s Insider Trading, that team is the Tampa Bay Lightning.

“The Blue Jackets front office over the last few days have poured over the offers, have looked at the different scenarios. Tampa Bay is the team of choice for Werenski,” LeBrun said. “Now, whether or not there’s a trade with Tampa Bay that can satisfy Columbus is another factor altogether. You know, does that require a third team getting involved?”

The market is bigger than Tampa

Werenski favoring Tampa Bay does not mean a deal happens tomorrow. The Lightning have cap considerations. Columbus wants a hockey trade, not a futures package. Those two things do not always line up easily.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported earlier that at least five teams had been in active discussions with Columbus. The list included the Dallas Stars, Utah Mammoth, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks. Tampa Bay was not on that list at the time, but other teams were said to be circling.

“Philadelphia wants in badly on Werenski, and there are other teams,” LeBrun added. “The bottom line is, Columbus does not want to make a futures deal. They want to make a hockey trade and that’s not easy to do.”

What is a hockey trade anyway

In simple terms, Columbus does not want draft picks and prospects for a player like Werenski. They want NHL talent back. A player-for-player deal that keeps the roster competitive now. That is harder to pull off when the asking price is a Norris Trophy caliber defenseman who can control games from the blue line.

Werenski is 27 years old with a cap hit that runs through 2028. He is not a rental. Any team acquiring him is getting a long-term cornerstone. That raises the cost but also limits the number of teams who can make that kind of move work financially and structurally.

The Blue Jackets are not in a rush. Free agency opens July 1 at 12 pm ET and that deadline changes the calculus for everybody. Teams that miss out on top free agents might circle back harder on a trade. Teams that land a big name could step back.

For now, the player has picked his preferred destination. The real work is in whether Columbus and Tampa can find a structure that actually works.
