Real Madrid’s Asking Price for Tchouameni Has Man United Rethinking Everything

Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild was supposed to be straightforward. Sign Ederson from Atalanta. Done. Go get Elliot Anderson. Almost done. Then target Mateus Fernandes as the long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo. But somewhere between those plans and reality, the boardroom got complicated.

Anderson is heading to Manchester City, not Old Trafford. Fernandes appears bound for Tottenham. And the guy United fans had already started dreaming about — Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni — might be a financial bridge too far.

That’s the update from Fabrizio Romano, who dropped the news on his YouTube channel this week. United still plan to sign at least one more midfielder this summer, possibly two. But Tchouameni? The numbers aren’t adding up.

The numbers problem

Romano laid it out bluntly. United loves the player. Tchouameni loves the idea of playing in England. But Real Madrid isn’t in the business of doing discounts. The transfer fee is high. The salary is high. Combined, it’s too rich for United’s current budget, especially after whatever they’re paying Ederson.

“The only way to open the door after missing out on Fernandes is to discuss a completely different salary structure,” Romano said. “And at the moment that isn’t happening.”

So United is back to square one. Again.

Which is frustrating, because on paper, Tchouameni checks every box. He’s 26. He’s won at Real Madrid. He’s a starter for France. He reads the game well enough to let Mainino roam forward and create. Last season he managed two goals and two assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, playing in a Madrid side that never quite found its rhythm but still competed.

He’s the kind of midfielder who could play 10 years at United. But only if the club can make the math work.

What’s next for United

The World Cup happening right now isn’t helping. A lot of potential targets are busy representing their countries, and it’s hard to finalize a transfer when nobody’s sitting in an office. United’s squad rebuild has barely started, and the season is creeping closer.

There are fallback options. Alex Scott has Premier League experience. Carlos Baleba has been on United’s radar for a while. Neither moves the needle the way Tchouameni would, but both are cheaper and easier to get done.

For now, United’s midfield plans are in a holding pattern. One priority target is gone to a rival. Another might be out of reach financially. And the clock is ticking.
