Manchester United have a new priority at left wing. According to Sky Sports, Crysencio Summerville of West Ham is now the club’s leading target among a four-man shortlist. The 24-year-old Dutch winger has been tracked by United’s recruitment team for months, and his performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup only strengthened their interest.
Summerville’s season at club level was underwhelming, but West Ham’s relegation to the Championship has changed the calculus. United see an opportunity to pull a Premier League-caliber player out of a relegated squad, something they tried to do with midfielder Mateus Fernandes before he chose Tottenham for £85 million.
The shortlist behind Summerville
United’s four options at left wing include Summerville, Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa), Matias Fernandez-Pardo (Lille), and Iliman Ndiaye (Everton). Of those, Summerville is viewed as both the most realistic and the best value for now. West Ham want around £50 million for him. Rogers would cost at least £80 million, Ndiaye around £70 million. Fernandez-Pardo is younger, 21, and seen as a long-term project, while Summerville is ready to contribute immediately.
But here’s the thing. None of this happens unless Marcus Rashford’s situation gets sorted first.
Rashford’s return complicates everything
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, where he played well enough that the Catalan club had a £26 million option to buy. They let it expire. Barcelona still want him back, but only on another loan. United would rather sell him outright to raise transfer funds.
Rashford’s priority has been to return to Barcelona. But as the summer drags on, he’s reportedly warming to the idea of staying at United, especially with Michael Carrick now in charge after replacing Ruben Amorim. Carrick has indicated he’d welcome the England forward back into the squad. Fabrizio Romano confirmed this week that direct contact has happened between Rashford’s camp and United, and both sides are open to reintegrating him.
“There has been a direct contact between Marcus Rashford camp and Manchester United,” Romano said. “Both parties open doors to restarting the process to reintegrate Marcus Rashford into Manchester United squad.”
Rashford hasn’t closed the door on staying, and United have made it clear they’d be happy to have him back in training.
What this means for Summerville
If Rashford stays, United’s need for a left winger becomes less urgent. They might still add depth, but Summerville would no longer be the priority. If Rashford leaves — either to Barcelona on loan or in a sale — United will likely move quickly to bring Summerville in.
Summerville is expected back in England soon to resolve his future. Talks could begin shortly. United have the cash, or at least the structure, to make a £50 million deal work. They just need to know where Rashford lands first.
For now, Summerville waits. So do United fans.
