Manchester United just watched Tottenham swipe Mateus Fernandes out from under them. But the club has already moved on to a new list of targets.
Spurs landed the West Ham midfielder for £85 million on Tuesday. That number was higher than United wanted to go, and they let him walk. Now Michael Carrick and the INEOS front office have a shortlist that reads like a midfield shopping spree at a premium store.
The Five Names on United’s Radar
According to multiple reports, the Red Devils have identified Bournemouth’s Alex Scott as a primary target. But the Cherries are playing hardball. They value Scott around £80 million and are pushing to extend his current deal, which runs through 2028. That makes any sale complicated.
Then there’s Felix Nmecha. The 25-year-old German midfielder currently plays for Borussia Dortmund and came up through Manchester City’s youth system. He’s reportedly keen on returning to the Premier League, and United have already explored a summer deal. Here’s the interesting twist: United’s director of football Jason Wilcox was City’s academy director when Nmecha was coming through. That personal connection could matter.
Aurelien Tchouameni is being described internally as a dream signing. That label comes from recent reporting in the Manchester Evening News and The Athletic. The French star is one of Europe’s best two-way midfielders, but a deal would require serious money and Real Madrid’s willingness to negotiate.
Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Fulham’s Sander Berge round out the list as more manageable options. United have kept tabs on both for a while.
Why the Urgency Is Real
This isn’t just standard summer shopping. United have a genuine problem in the middle of the pitch.
Casemiro left on a free transfer, which opened a hole. Manuel Ugarte then suffered a ligament injury while playing for Uruguay in a 1-0 loss to Spain. He’s expected to miss between nine and 12 months. That’s basically the entire season.
Right now, Kobbie Mainoo is the only orthodox defensive midfielder on the roster. Bruno Fernandes can drop deeper, but everyone knows he’s most dangerous further up the field. Carrick needs bodies, and he needs them before Champions League group play starts.
United already passed on two expensive options this window. They decided Elliot Anderson at £116 million (Manchester City’s price) and Mateus Fernandes at £85 million weren’t worth the investment. That logic makes sense if you’re trying to avoid overpaying. But it also means the next move has to be the right one.
Nmecha had a solid World Cup for Germany before Paraguay knocked them out on penalties in the round of 32. Scott has zero senior caps for England but joined their pre-World Cup camp, which tells you how the staff there views his potential.
Carrick became interim manager in January after Ruben Amorim was fired. He got the job permanently on May 22 after securing Champions League qualification. Now he gets to spend the summer trying to build a midfield that can compete at that level.
