Brian Windhorst: Lakers Expected to Add Sandro Mamukelashvili as Rui Hachimura Replacement

Brian Windhorst dropped some interesting intel during ESPN’s NBA free agency special. The veteran reporter said league executives believe Sandro Mamukelashvili is heading to the Los Angeles Lakers. And not just as a depth piece either. Windhorst framed it as a direct swap for Rui Hachimura.

“The league believes Sandro Mamukelashvili is headed to the Lakers,” Windhorst said. “That’s what people in the league believe. And he would basically replace Rui Hachimura.”

That tracks with what Marc Stein reported earlier. Stein said the Lakers had been showing serious interest in Mamukelashvili as soon as free agency opened. The team is clearly trying to retool around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves after LeBron James left, and that means making some hard decisions about the roster.

Mamukelashvili just put up the best numbers of his NBA career. The guy played 80 regular-season games for Toronto and averaged 11.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists. He shot 52.3% from the floor. That’s not nothing for a versatile big who can stretch the floor and run the floor. His role shrank during Toronto’s seven-game first-round playoff series against Cleveland, but that doesn’t erase what he showed over the full season.

If the Lakers pull this off, they’re getting a frontcourt player who fits the modern NBA. Mamukelashvili can play inside, step out and shoot, and he brings energy on both ends. He’s not a star and nobody is pretending he is. But replacing Hachimura with a similar but slightly different skill set tells you something about how the Lakers are thinking about their new identity.

There’s also the Quentin Grimes angle. Stein reported the Lakers have interest in the Sixers guard too. So this might not be a one-move offseason. Los Angeles has a lot of holes to fill and not a ton of cap flexibility. Signing Mamukelashvili would be a solid start. The question is what else they can do around the edges.

The Lakers haven’t confirmed anything yet. But when multiple NBA insiders point in the same direction, it’s usually worth paying attention. Mamukelashvili might not be a household name, but he’s exactly the kind of player teams need when they’re trying to build a deeper, more versatile rotation around two stars.
