Alyssa Thomas Says Death Threats Followed Her Hard Foul on Caitlin Clark

Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas is speaking out after she says she received death threats following a controversial foul on Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. The incident, which happened during their June 29 matchup, showed Thomas appearing to make contact with Clark’s throat after a play near the basket. The WNBA suspended Thomas for one game, a decision she claims she didn’t even learn about until roughly ten minutes before it went public.

Thomas didn’t hold back when discussing the fallout. According to a report from USA Today Sports’ Cydney Henderson, the 34-year-old called on the league itself to do more in protecting its players from harassment.

“We’re so concerned with safety on the court, but time and time again we’re having people threatening our lives,” Thomas said. “The league remains silent. I’m sick and tired of it.”

The foul that sparked everything

The play itself turned into a viral moment almost instantly. Video clips showed Thomas pushing Clark to the court after a whistle, with her hand pressing into Clark’s neck area. Clark, who has been the center of massive attention in her rookie season, wasn’t injured on the play. But the league’s suspension made it clear the WNBA viewed the foul as crossing a line.

Thomas isn’t the first WNBA player to face online vitriol after a high-profile incident. The league has struggled with how to handle the flood of hateful messages players receive, especially when those messages escalate into direct threats. More than a few players have spoken out over the years about the lack of a consistent response from the league office.

Mercury adjusting without Thomas

Phoenix will be without Thomas for one game. It’s not a long suspension, but it hits the Mercury at a tricky point in the schedule. Thomas is a key piece for Phoenix, known for her relentless defense and playmaking. The team hasn’t announced whether they’ll appeal or if Thomas intends to challenge the league’s decision.

Clark responded to questions about the incident with a fairly measured take, saying she didn’t think there was any intent to injure but that the play was probably a bit over the line. She also pointed out that the league’s handling of physical play has been inconsistent all season, which isn’t exactly a hot take at this point.

As for Thomas, she’s now dealing with more than just a suspension. She’s openly asking the WNBA to step up. Whether the league makes any kind of formal statement or policy change remains to be seen. But Thomas isn’t quietly moving on from this one. She made that clear.
