LeBron James is moving on from the Lakers. That much is clear now. But the rumor mill has been working overtime trying to figure out why, and one theory that keeps popping up is that Luka Doncic had something to do with it.
That theory is wrong, according to people who would actually know.
What This NBA Insider Is Saying About LeBron and Luka
Dan Woike of The Athletic talked to league sources who know both players. The short version is that any talk of bad blood between James and Doncic is just noise. There was no tension. No behind-the-scenes push from the younger star to force the older one out.
“There might be an instinct here to think that Luka Dončić helped push LeBron James out the door, but league sources who know both, who were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation, insist the two players had no personal issues with one another,” Woike wrote.
That’s about as direct as an anonymous source gets. And frankly it lines up with what we saw on the court. The two looked fine playing together. Did they set the league on fire the way some hoped? No. But that’s more about fit and health than any personal friction.
The Reality of That Short-Lived Duo
James and Doncic only shared the floor for a handful of games before the 41-year-old decided to move on. Injuries messed with the timeline. Chemistry needs reps, and they never really got enough of them.
Doncic is still one of the best players in the world. James is still playing at a level that doesn’t make sense for his age. But the Lakers experiment with both of them together never had a real chance to cook. That doesn’t mean it was a disaster behind closed doors.
If anything, the idea that Doncic would try to push LeBron out is a little silly when you think about it. Doncic came to L.A. to win. LeBron is still a walking triple-double. Why would either guy want to wreck that?
More details will come out as James lands with his next team and Doncic figures out what the Lakers look like without him. But for now, the people in the room are saying the split was just business. No drama. No conspiracy. Just two great players whose timelines didn’t quite match up.
