Liverpool and Arsenal Are Lining Up for Japan’s World Cup Hero Kaishu Sano

Kaishu Sano scored in Japan’s World Cup match against Brazil on Monday. His team still lost 2-1. But that goal might end up being the most important one he ever scores — at least for his bank account.

The 25-year-old Mainz midfielder is suddenly one of the most wanted players in Europe. According to Japanese outlet Nikkan Sports, Liverpool has shown strong interest. So have Arsenal, Manchester United, and Borussia Dortmund. That’s four of the biggest clubs in the world all looking at the same guy.

Sano just finished a monster season for Mainz. He played in 48 matches across all competitions. That’s a ton of games for a midfielder. He scored twice and added five assists. Not flashy numbers, but his real value comes from the dirty work in the middle of the field. He breaks up plays, keeps possession moving, and has a knack for showing up in big moments — like that World Cup goal.

Why the sudden rush

Here’s the thing about Sano. He’s under contract through 2028. Mainz isn’t in a hurry to sell. They can sit back and let the bidding war develop. Bild reported back in March that the Bundesliga club could ask for somewhere between €50 million and €60 million. That’s a lot for a guy who wasn’t a household name six months ago.

But international tournaments do weird things to player values. One good performance on the biggest stage and suddenly everyone wants a piece. Sano’s goal against Brazil wasn’t just a consolation strike. It was a statement. He went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the world and looked like he belonged.

Manchester United needs midfield help bad. Arsenal could use depth behind Declan Rice. Liverpool is retooling under a new look. Dortmund is always hunting for young talent they can develop and flip. So the interest makes sense from every angle.

Mainz has been here before. They’ve developed players and sold them for big money. Sano looks like the next in that line. The only question now is who blinks first and writes the check.
